Kerala has one of the strongest independent music cultures in India. Its bands came up through college stages, TV music shows and, more recently, streaming and film soundtracks. This page is a song list. For the bands and the scene, read Best Malayalam indie bands and artists and Kerala indie music scene first. Here we pick tracks, mostly in Malayalam, from rock to folk-pop to rap.
Every song below is released and listed on Apple Music India (checked 28 October 2026). Band histories come from our live artist pages and Wikipedia. We don't cite stream counts.
The rock groundwork
1. Avial: "Nada Nada". Avial formed in Thiruvananthapuram in 2003, and "Nada Nada", first released as a single that year, was their breakthrough. The founding line-up was vocalist Anandraj Benjamin Paul, guitarist Rex Vijayan, turntablist and backing vocalist Tony John, bassist Naresh Kamath and drummer Mithun Puthanveetil. The song anchors their self-titled album, which Apple dates to February 2008. Read Avial band and the artist page.
2. Avial: "Aadu Pambe". A second pick from Avial, because the album is the scene's founding document. The band called its style "alternative Malayali rock", and it won six of seven Jack Daniel's Rock Awards that year. "Chekele", from the same record, is the next stop. Avial later moved into film, with soundtrack work on Salt & Pepper (2011) and 22 Female Kottayam (2012).
3. Motherjane: "Mahabali". Motherjane formed in Kochi in 1996 and mixed progressive rock with Carnatic and world-music influences. They mostly sing in English, but no Kerala rock story works without them. Their best-known albums, Insane Biography (2002) and Maktub (2008), aren't on Apple Music India. What is there is Dobareh, a nine-track album dated June 2026, which holds "Mahabali", "Home" and the title track. See the artist page.
The fusion wave
4. Thaikkudam Bridge: "Fish Rock". Thaikkudam Bridge formed in Kerala in 2013, conceived by Siddharth Menon and Govind Vasantha and named after a bridge in Kochi. "Fish Rock" was their debut original, first performed on the Kappa TV show Music Mojo; it's the one people know by its opening list of fish names. Apple lists it as a 2013 single. Read Thaikkudam Bridge history and the artist page.
5. Thaikkudam Bridge: "Navarasam". The title track of their 2015 album Navarasam. For the band's more ambitious side, go next to Namah (2019), made with Govind Vasantha and guests including Chris Adler, Niladri Kumar and Umayalpuram K. Sivaraman.
6. Masala Coffee: "Kaantha". Masala Coffee was founded by Varun Sunil in 2014 and calls its sound alternative folk rock. "Kaantha" first appeared on the soundtrack of the 2016 Tamil film Uriyadi, credited to Masala Coffee with Sooraj Santhosh and Varun Sunil. It's the band's signature and a folk-pop standard. Read Masala Coffee and the artist page.
7. Masala Coffee: "Kaantha Njaanum Varaam" (2026). Released as a single in June 2026, with Varun Sunil and Sooraj, it's the band's follow-up to their best-known song. Play the two back to back.
Singer-songwriters
8. Job Kurian: "Padayatra (Live)". Job Kurian works in both indie music and Malayalam film; in 2023 he won the SIIMA award for Best Male Playback Singer in Malayalam. This 2015 live single is a good way into his independent work. See the artist page.
9. Job Kurian: "Kannodu" (feat. Mridula Warrier). Another 2015 live single, this one a duet. From there, try the studio singles "Enthavo" (2017) and "Mulla" (2018).
10. Project Malabaricus with Sithara: "Pilleranu". Sithara Krishnakumar is a three-time Kerala State Film Award-winning playback singer, trained in Hindustani and Carnatic music. Outside film, Apple credits her with the independent project Project Malabaricus. "Pilleranu" is on Rithu (March 2021), alongside "Arutharuthu" and "Chayapattu". Later singles include "Bhagavathi" (2024) and "Elelam Kili" (February 2026).
Rap and the new wave
11. Dabzee: "Manavaalan Thug". Dabzee is the stage name of Mohammed Fasil, a rapper, singer and songwriter born in Malappuram in 1991. "Manavaalan Thug", with SA, from the 2022 film Thallumaala, was his film debut and the song that made his name. Then try his album 10 Gully (2024) and the DELKOCHI EP with Rishi Roy (2025). See the artist page.
12. Street Academics: a track from Loop. Street Academics are an alternative hip-hop group from Kerala whose lyrics mix Malayalam, English and Tamil and range from social realism to dystopian fantasy. Apple lists Aathmasphere & Chatha Kaakka EP (2016) and the album Loop (2019).
13. ThirumaLi: "Malayali Da". A 2019 single from the Malayalam rapper, followed by "AARDA?" (2021) and "Pacha Parishkari" (2024, with K. J. Yesudas and Jay Stellar).
14. ThirumaLi, ThudWiser, Fejo and Dabzee: "Sambar". A November 2023 posse cut that puts several of the new wave's voices on one track. It's the quickest way to hear how the scene sounds now.
Kerala bands in other languages
15. When Chai Met Toast: "Joy of Little Things". Not Malayalam, but this Kochi band is the best-known Kerala indie export of the last decade. Our artist page notes that they sing mostly in English and Hindi, with occasional Tamil and Malayalam lyrics. Apple lists "Joy of Little Things" as a 2017 single.

Why Malayalam indie travels
Kerala bands came out of a strong live culture and from TV formats like Music Mojo, which gave them performance chops early. The Malayalam film industry has also been unusually open to independent musicians: Avial, Job Kurian and Dabzee all moved between their own records and soundtracks. Our regional sounds reshaping Indian music piece looks at how this plays out across languages.
