Three of the eight 2026 releases on Spotify's Rock in India are sung in Bengali. They come from Fossils 7, the February album by the Kolkata band Fossils, and at our 8:34 AM IST check on 16 October 2026 they sat at Nos. 13, 18 and 23 on the country's rock shelf. Now look across at Fresh Finds India, the fifty-song list Spotify keeps for new and early-career independent artists. Every one of its fifty songs came out this year. Of the 43 we could match on JioSaavn, the store tags 35 as Hindi and eight as English. Not one carries the tag of any other Indian language. The playlist built for the future of Indian indie speaks two languages. The playlist built for its past carries seven.

How we counted
At 8:34 AM IST on 16 October 2026 we pulled the full running order of both playlists from Spotify's public embed pages: 50 songs on Fresh Finds India, 100 on Rock in India. Spotify does not show a song's language there, so we used the nearest public label we could check at scale: JioSaavn's per-track language tag. We searched JioSaavn for every title and kept a match only when the title and the lead artist agreed. That matched 43 of 50 Fresh Finds India songs and 86 of 100 on Rock in India. The rest are counted as untagged, not guessed.
A store tag is metadata, not a listening verdict, so we tested it against songs this publication has already covered. It held. Saroj Kashyap's Mohana, which we reviewed as English-language pop, is tagged English. The Yellow Diary's Sajni, a Punjabi ballad, is tagged Punjabi. The new Fossils songs are tagged Bengali. The tag also has edges. Jatayu's The Wick carries a Telugu tag although the Chennai band plays mostly instrumental music, and the line between Hindi and Urdu is a filing choice as much as a linguistic one. None of those edges changes the shape of what follows.
Fresh Finds India: two languages, fifty songs
Of the 43 matched Fresh Finds India songs, 35 are tagged Hindi, or 81 per cent, and eight are tagged English, or 19 per cent. We have not counted the seven untagged tracks, though their titles give no hint of a third language: four are English (Somebody to Love, Stranger, Lauren, Romeo.) and three are Hindi (Tu Mera Jahaan, Kaahe Sataye, Tu Hi Tu).
English clusters near the top. Six of the first thirteen slots are English-tagged: niank's Longer Way Back Home, Salt Rock's Stay, Mohana, Sijya's Do I Know, The DANGERMEN's Bloom and the trio single emergency contact. Rohit Bhatia's Oceans Apart follows at No. 22. From No. 26 to No. 50, 22 of 25 songs are tagged Hindi, one is English (Saroj Kashyap's More Than Just Friends at No. 37) and two are untagged. The lower half of India's discovery list is, in practice, a Hindi playlist.
That is not a complaint about Hindi. Hindi independent songwriting is in a strong run, and several of these songs have earned full reviews here, from Galat Admi & Sakré's Bhool Ja at No. 1 to Vardaan Malhotra's Khatt and Vaibhav Malhotra's Afreen. The complaint is about the walls around them.
Rock in India is the multilingual shelf
Rock in India matched 86 of its 100 songs. Hindi still leads with 57, or 66 per cent. English has 20, or 23 per cent. The other nine carry five more language tags: Bengali three, Punjabi two, Telugu two, Malayalam one and Urdu one. Eight of those nine sit in the top 29.
Thaikkudam Bridge's Malayalam-tagged Fish Rock is No. 4. Fossils hold Nos. 13, 18 and 23 with Khudharto Mangsashi, Jodi Tumi and Long Drive-e Wrong Drive-e. The Yellow Diary's Rab Raakha is No. 21, and Parvaaz's Kauaʻi ʻōʻō, tagged Urdu, is No. 22. Agam's Telugu reworking of Thyagaraja's Mokshamu Galada is No. 25, and Sajni is No. 29. The ninth is The Wick at No. 78.
We have written about regional rock bands beyond Hindi before. The point here is narrower. The shelf that measures careers in decades is more open to India's languages than the shelf that measures them in weeks.
This is not an old-music problem
The easy explanation is age. Rock in India is a canon shelf. By Spotify's dates its median song was 1,222 days old at our check, more than three years, against about nine weeks on Fresh Finds India, as we showed in How Fresh Is Fresh Finds India? Perhaps the rock list simply remembers a more multilingual era.
The release dates say otherwise. Rock in India holds 23 songs released in 2025 or 2026, and six of them carry tags outside Hindi and English: the three Fossils songs, released on 13 February 2026; Agam's Mokshamu Galada, 27 May 2025; Parvaaz's Kauaʻi ʻōʻō, 5 November 2025; and The Wick, 23 November 2025. Of the eight 2026 releases on the rock list, three are Bengali. Of the fifty 2026 releases on Fresh Finds India, going by JioSaavn's tags, none is in a language other than Hindi or English.
So regional-language independent music is being released now, and Spotify's editors are playlisting it now, on the rock shelf, for bands working well over a decade. Fossils were formed in Kolkata in 1998. What is missing is the first rung.
Separate doors, one pipeline
Spotify's own numbers make the gap harder to explain. Its India Loud & Clear report, published on 2 September 2026, says royalties generated by Indian artists on Spotify grew 29 per cent in 2025, Its list of the biggest regional-language rises reads: Telugu up over 120 per cent, Marathi nearly 50, Bengali nearly 40, Malayalam over 30, Hindi nearly 30, Tamil 20. Bengali grew faster than Hindi. Fresh Finds India, at our check, carried no Bengali-tagged song.
Part of the answer is structural. Spotify has built separate doors for some languages. Fresh Finds Punjabi launched in April 2024 alongside RADAR Punjabi, with four artists a month, as the Deccan Chronicle reported on 20 April 2024; at our check it was a live 49-song playlist. RADAR Tamil arrived in 2023 and RADAR Malayalam in July 2026, according to Dhruvank Vaidya, Spotify India's head of music and podcasts, in an interview with The New Indian Express. That helps explain why a Punjabi independent song is unlikely to surface on Fresh Finds India: it has a list of its own.
Separate doors carry a cost, and Vaidya described the mechanism himself in that interview: "Many artists first emerge through 'Fresh Finds' before moving into RADAR. In fact, five of our nine RADAR India artists this year were previously featured on 'Fresh Finds'." If the national discovery list is a main feeder into national artist development, the language of that list becomes the language of the pipeline. A Bengali or Kannada songwriter, whose language has no Fresh Finds list of its own that we could find, is competing for a national list that this week holds only Hindi and English tags.
What this publication thinks
We do not think Spotify's editors are hostile to any language; the rock shelf proves they are not. We cannot see what is pitched to Fresh Finds India, and it is possible that few regional-language independent songs are submitted to it. If so, that is a signal too. Artists read playlists the way they read festival line-ups, and a list that is all Hindi and English teaches the next songwriter which language to write in if they want to be found.
We argued in Beyond Hindi and English that discovery should not require leaving your language behind. The data now puts a number on that worry. Fresh Finds India should either say plainly that it is a Hindi and English list, or it should carry the languages Spotify's own report celebrates. A handful of regional slots a week would say clearly who the national door is for.
There is a confession in this too. discography.in takes its beat from these two playlists, so their language mix becomes ours. Our recent run of Fresh Finds India reviews has been a run of Hindi and English songs because the list is. That is why we counted, and why we will keep saying so.
The next Fossils is probably writing in Bengali, or Malayalam, or Telugu, right now. On this week's evidence, the rock shelf might find that band in fifteen years. The discovery shelf, as it stands, is not built to find it.
