About Discography, an Indian music magazine
Discography is an independent music magazine from India. We write about the artists making the country's most interesting music outside the film and label machine: Bengali rock veterans, bedroom producers in Pune, Malayalam fusion bands, Hindi singer-songwriters with a phone and a melody, and the many scenes in between. If you are looking for an Indian independent music magazine that listens closely and writes honestly, this is what we set out to build.
What we cover
Discography covers Indian independent music in four main ways.
- Reviews of new singles, EPs and albums, written as criticism, not press copy. Every review gives an honest opinion and a clear reason for it.
- Artist profiles and artist hubs. Profiles trace an artist's history through their records, collaborators and cities. Each artist hub collects everything we have published on that artist in one place, so readers can follow a band or a producer over time.
- Scene and analysis. These are data-led pieces on playlists, languages, collaborations, city scenes and how independent musicians in India actually release, earn and survive.
- Monthly issues, an editor's selection of the month's essential stories.
Alongside these, we are building a catalog of Indian independent music: a permanent, searchable record of artists, releases and the stories around them.
Why we exist
Indian independent music has never had more artists and fewer places that take them seriously. Most coverage is either a reposted press release or a list of names. We wanted an Indian music magazine that listens first, writes with care and keeps a lasting record of the music as it happens: a discography of the scene. That is where the name comes from. Independent artists across India release music every week in many languages and from many cities, and much of it never gets a serious review. Discography exists to give that work the attention, context and permanence it deserves.
How we work
Every piece starts with listening. Factual claims, from release dates to labels to songwriting credits, are checked against a primary source and linked in the article, so readers can check them too. When we get something wrong, we correct it in public and note the correction. Our full standards are set out in our editorial policy, and our approach to errors is described on the corrections page. We write about songs the week they arrive and about artists who have been making music for decades, because a scene is made of both.
Who makes it
Discography was founded by Aman Raj and is based in Jaipur, Rajasthan. It is edited by @de. The masthead lists who does what and how to reach them.
Independence
Coverage on Discography is not for sale. We don't accept money, gifts or favours in exchange for coverage, and artists and labels cannot buy articles or review them before they are published. Editorial decisions are made by the editors alone. This independence is the reason the magazine exists, and it is set out in detail in our editorial policy.
Ownership and funding
Discography is published by NEXOVE PRIVATE LIMITED (CIN U62011RJ2026PTC119037), registered at D-58, Nirman Nagar, Vaishali Nagar, Jaipur, Rajasthan 302021, India. NEXOVE is the magazine's publisher.
For artists, labels and readers
If you are an independent artist or label, you can send us music through the submit page. Submitting music does not guarantee coverage; we choose what to write about on editorial grounds. Artists featured on Discography can download badges and share cards from the press kit. If you are a reader, start with the latest reviews, explore the artist profiles, or read the monthly issue. If you are new to independent music media, read our independent music magazines in India.
