Kerala has built one of the most confident independent music scenes in India, and it did so mostly in Malayalam. From a progressive rock band that started at a Kochi college festival, to the group that named its style "alternative Malayali rock," to a band whose song about fish went viral, to rappers who now win state film awards, the Kerala indie music scene shows that singing in your own language is a strength, not a ceiling. This guide follows the story from the 1990s to now. Every artist fact is sourced at the end of the page.

Why Kerala's scene works

Three things run through the history below:

Malayalam first. Kerala's biggest independent acts became famous for Malayalam lyrics, not in spite of them. Kochi as a hub. Several key bands formed in or around Kochi, and musicians moved between them. A two-way street with cinema. Kerala indie artists regularly write for Malayalam films, and film work feeds back into their independent careers.

The 1990s and 2000s: rock lays the groundwork

Motherjane (formed 1996, Kochi)

Motherjane formed in Kochi in 1996. Wikipedia records that it began when drummer John Thomas, guitarist Mithun Raju and bassist Clyde Rozario stepped in for a band that had pulled out of a college festival at St. Albert's College, Kochi. Vocalist Suraj Mani joined in 2000 and started writing the band's original songs, beginning with "Disillusioned." Guitarist Baiju Dharmajan replaced Raju around 1999.

The band's debut, Insane Biography (2002), became influential in Indian rock. Its follow-up, Maktub (2008), was praised for blending progressive rock with Indian musical elements, and Wikipedia notes that Rolling Stone India picked it as a standout album of its year. After a 12-year break, Motherjane reunited for a 15th-anniversary tour of Maktub. Between 2024 and 2026 it played festivals including Hornbill, Mahindra Independence Rock and Bengaluru Hubba. Avial (formed 2003)

Avial formed in Thiruvananthapuram in 2003 and is known for pioneering what the band calls "alternative Malayali rock": Malayalam lyrics set to rock music. Its connection to Kochi is direct. Guitarist Rex Vijayan had spent five years with Motherjane before Avial, according to Wikipedia.

The original line-up was vocalist Anandraj Benjamin Paul, guitarist Rex Vijayan, turntablist and backing vocalist Tony John, bassist Naresh Kamath and drummer Mithun Puthanveetil. Its first breakthrough was the 2003 single "Nada Nada." The band is named after avial, the mixed-vegetable dish served as part of a sadya, because its music blends many influences.

Avial's self-titled album won six of seven Jack Daniels Rock Awards and the Footprints Young Achiever's Award in 2008. Wikipedia notes that the band was praised for reaching the mainstream while singing in its own language. After Paul and Kamath left in 2008, Tony John took over vocals and Binny Isaac joined on bass. Avial has also written film songs: "Aana Kallan" for Salt N' Pepper (2011), "Chillane" for 22 Female Kottayam (2012) and three songs for Second Show (2012).

Lesson for independent bands: Avial first recorded "Nada Nada" in English and didn't promote it. The Malayalam version is the one that broke through.

The 2010s: viral bands and multilingual crews

Thaikkudam Bridge (formed 2013)

Thaikkudam Bridge is a multi-genre band formed in Kerala in 2013 and named after a bridge in Kochi. Wikipedia records that its rise began on the Kappa TV music show Music Mojo. Its "Nostalgia" medley of 1980s and 1990s Malayalam film songs went viral first. On 30 August 2013 the band released its first original song, "Fish Rock" (known by its lyrics "Ayela, mathi, choora, kaari…"), which spread on YouTube and brought its first commercial success.

The debut album Navarasam (2015) has nine songs in Malayalam, Tamil and Hindi, on themes from political satire to social inequality. Wikipedia says that by 2024 the band had played more than 600 shows in 25 countries. It is the band in this page's cover photo. Read more in Thaikkudam Bridge: A History .

Wikipedia records that it came together as a collective in 2009 after members met through hip-hop communities on Myspace and Orkut. The group has worked with Mappila Lahala, a cultural music collective led by filmmaker Muhsin Parari, on politically themed singles, and set up the avant-garde project Palakkadan Dystopia. Its multilingual album Loop is loosely based on the seven deadly sins. Keyboardist Ruthin Thej produced a few of its early singles before leaving to play keyboards for Thaikkudam Bridge, another example of how connected the Kerala scene is.

Kochi beyond the stage

The Kochi-Muziris Biennale, an international contemporary art exhibition held across Kochi, is described by Wikipedia as the largest art exhibition in India and the biggest contemporary art festival in Asia. It runs in galleries, heritage buildings and public spaces across the city. It is an art event first, but it brings large creative crowds to Kochi, which is useful context for any musician planning a visit or a show.

What independent musicians can learn from Kerala

Your first language can be your breakthrough. Avial and Thaikkudam Bridge both broke through in Malayalam. TV and YouTube sessions can launch a band. Music Mojo gave Thaikkudam Bridge its first viral moments. Reunions can work. Motherjane's anniversary tour shows that an old catalogue can still find new audiences. Film is an income stream, not a destination. Avial, Masala Coffee, Job Kurian and Vedan all work in film and outside it.
