A short history of Indian music
Classical traditions — Hindustani and Carnatic lineages, plus folk practices across regions — shaped how India heard melody, rhythm, and improvisation long before recorded pop. Film music then became the country’s mass soundtrack, with studio systems and playback stars defining the radio and cassette eras.
From the 1990s onward, independent bands, hip-hop crews, electronic producers, and regional-language scenes built paths outside that film pipeline.
