Europe has no single indie chart, so the most useful map of its independent artists in 2026 comes from the labels themselves. Every spring IMPALA, the trade body for Europe's independent music companies, publishes 100 Artists to Watch with YouTube. The 2026 edition, the programme's fifth, was announced on 26 March 2026 and covers artists from 29 countries, all nominated by independent labels or self-released (IMPALA 2026 list). We picked 15 from it to start with.

What counts as independent in Europe

IMPALA's test is about the company, not the sound: an artist counts as independent when their recordings come out on a label that isn't owned by Universal, Sony or Warner, or when they release the music themselves. That's why one list can hold a Norwegian Sámi joik singer and a Belgian club producer. Until 2022 IMPALA gave a European Independent Album of the Year award (past winners include The xx, Caribou, Agnes Obel and Viagra Boys). The 100 Artists to Watch programme replaced it (IMPALA awards).

Independent artists Europe 2026: the list

Labels and countries are as IMPALA lists them. None of these artists has a Discography page yet, so the links go to IMPALA's list, which is the source.

  1. Oklou (UK list entry; True Panther Sounds / Because Music): French-born producer-singer whose glassy electronic pop has crossed over to an international audience.
  2. Coach Party (UK; Chess Club Records): Isle of Wight guitar band, loud and hook-heavy.
  3. Gia Ford (UK; Chrysalis Records): cinematic, noir-ish songwriting.
  4. anaiis (UK; 5dB Records): soul and R&B with a multilingual streak.
  5. Ebow (Germany; Garip Werkstätten): Munich-raised rapper, sharp and political.
  6. Derya Yıldırım & Grup Şimşek (Germany; Big Crown Records): Anatolian psych-folk built around the bağlama.

India and Europe: the independent link

The European list and our Indian lists rest on the same idea: the artist or a small label owns the music, and the audience is built directly. Indian independent acts have put that idea to work in Europe. Bloodywood became a regular on the European metal festival circuit without a major label, and Hanumankind took Indian hip-hop to international stages. For the Indian side of the story, start with Independent Artists 2026: The List. Our deeper picks are in Best Indian Independent Artists 2026 and Best Indian Rappers 2026. For dates, check each artist's official channels; we don't list tour dates here because they change.

Where to read about European independent music

The Quietus and The Line of Best Fit (UK), Groove (Germany), Tsugi (France) and Mondo Sonoro (Spain) cover these scenes closely. Our List of Music Magazines has more by country.

How we picked

Every name comes from IMPALA's 2026 list, which means a European independent label or self-release and activity in 2025–26. Within that, we aimed for a spread of countries and genres, plus artists whose recent releases have reached beyond their home market.
