Tamil independent music has had a big decade. Most of the headlines went to rap and gaana, and we cover those in Tamil indie hip-hop artists. This page covers everyone else: singer-songwriters, rock bands, Carnatic crossover acts, diaspora artists writing in Tamil, and indie musicians from elsewhere who have started working in Tamil.
Released work only. Titles and dates come from Apple Music India (checked 28 October 2026). Biographical facts come from Wikipedia and our live artist pages. We don't cite stream counts, and we've left out names whose catalogues we couldn't confirm.
Singer-songwriters
Kaber Vasuki (Chennai). Kaber Vasuki is an independent Tamil artist known for philosophical lyrics and story-led songs. He was born in Coimbatore, moved to Chennai in 2010 and in 2015 co-founded the Chennai pop-rock band Kurangan with Tenma. In 2021 he made headlines outside music by selling a phone demo of his song "Vasanam" as an NFT.
His Apple catalogue is the deepest of any artist on this page. Start with the six-track Azhagu Puratchi EP (2014), then Kurangan Era (2019), a 33-track collection that includes "Vasanam" and "Manitha Subhavam". More recent are the EP Kaalame Kalipputhaan (2024), Raw Tapes 01 (Acoustic) (July 2025) and the 25-track live set Oorvalam 2024 (Live from Chennai) (September 2025). He has also moved into film, with soundtrack credits on Metro Maalai (2020), Aelay (2021) and Simple Manusan (2025), and co-credits on Captain Miller (2024) and Parasakthi (2026).
Bands
Oorka. Apple lists a self-titled nine-track album from March 2016, with "Peraasai" and "Kaliyugam", and a live single, "Thedadhey (Madras Gig)" (2018). The band also turns up on film soundtracks: "Nee Vaanavilla" and "Onnumilla" on Aadai (2019) and "Aaha Ooho" on Dharala Prabhu (2020), a soundtrack Kaber Vasuki also worked on.
The F16s (Chennai). An English-language indie rock band from Chennai, but a central part of the city's independent scene. Their albums are Kaleidoscope (2013) and Triggerpunkte (2016), with the EPs WKND FRNDS (2019) and Is It Time to Eat the Rich yet? (2021). A new ten-track album, All Dogs Go To Heaven, came out on 21 October 2026. See the artist page and our Chennai indie music scene guide.
Agam (Bengaluru). A Carnatic progressive rock band formed in Bengaluru in 2003 by college musicians who shared an interest in progressive rock and Indian classical music. They're not a Chennai act, but their Carnatic roots and South Indian audience put them in this conversation. Their debut album The Inner Self Awakens (2012) was remastered in 2024, and Arrival of The Ethereal followed in August 2025. Read Agam band and the artist page.
Carnatic crossover
Indosoul by Karthick Iyer. Violinist Karthick Iyer's project mixes Carnatic violin with contemporary arrangements. Apple lists Looking Within to Look Beyond (2015), The Pallavi Shift (2017), Two Sides of Karma (2019), Equilibrium (2023) and Soul Sabha Season 1 (2023). He also works across languages: "Tere Pyaar Mein" (January 2024) is a Hindi single with Kamakshi Khanna.
Our Carnatic fusion artists guide covers more players who connect the classical tradition with rock, jazz and electronic music.
Indie artists working in Tamil
Sanjeeta Bhattacharya. Not a Tamil artist, but her 2026 single "Kaadhal Yaathiriye" with rudh and Thamizh Aadhavan, released under Think Indie in May, shows how Tamil indie now draws collaborators from across the country. A follow-up, "Kaadhal Yaathiriye: 'Keezhadi' The Lost Verse", came out in July 2026.
Dhruv Visvanath. The Delhi guitarist's catalogue includes "Nanpagal Neram", with Kapil Kapilan, from the 2024 Tamil film Por. It's another link between Tamil screen music and the indie circuit.
Diaspora
Shan Vincent de Paul (Toronto). A Sri Lankan-born Tamil Canadian recording artist and director. His debut album Saviors came out in 2016, followed by Trigger Happy Heartbreak and the EP SVDP 1 in 2017. On Apple Music India you'll find Made in Jaffna (2021, credited to SVDP) and "Cricket Rap" from the Telugu film Dasara (2023), with Santhosh Narayanan.
Tamil indie is global. Sri Lankan, Malaysian and North American Tamil scenes all release music that Indian listeners stream. We'll add more diaspora artists as we confirm their catalogues.
Labels and platforms
Think Indie, the independent arm of Chennai label Think Music, has been central for Tamil independent releases; "Kaadhal Yaathiriye" is one recent example. Our Indian independent record labels guide puts it alongside other imprints. For artists, see regional language release strategy.
