The Punjabi indie artists to know in 2026 are Bohemia, Sidhu Moose Wala, Karan Aujla, AP Dhillon, Gurinder Gill, Shubh, Prabh Deep and Rashmeet Kaur. None of them built their names on wedding-floor bhangra. They came up through hip-hop, R&B, trap and Sufi-folk fusion, and many did it on their own labels or small independent ones rather than through the big film-music companies.

Punjabi music now reaches far beyond Punjab. Its artists chart in Canada, the UK and New Zealand, and some stream in the billions. This list covers the people who built that independent path, from the Oakland studio where desi hip-hop took shape in the early 2000s to Delhi's Azadi Records and artist-run labels such as Run-Up Records and 5911 Records. Each entry gives you the basics, how they release music and where to start listening.

Why "beyond bhangra" matters

Bhangra-pop became the global shorthand for Punjabi music, but the artists on this list mostly write rap verses, R&B hooks and folk-poetry adaptations. Several of them also own or run their own labels. That is a big part of why Punjabi music sits at the centre of conversations about releasing music without a record label in India. Our earlier list of the best Indian rappers in 2026 noted that Punjabi rap deserved its own guide. This is that guide.

1. Bohemia

Roger David, known as Bohemia, was born on 15 October 1979 in Karachi, to a Punjabi Christian family originally from Lahore. He moved to the United States with his family at the age of 13. Wikipedia describes him as one of the pioneers of desi hip-hop.

In early 2000 he joined his cousin in Oakland, where he met the hip-hop producer Sha One (Seth Agress). The two formed their own label, The Outfit Entertainment. His debut album, Vich Pardesan De (In the Foreign Land), was an autobiographical record about a desi youngster adapting to American streets, produced by the pair. His follow-up, Pesa Nasha Pyar (Money, Intoxication, Love), became the first full-length Punjabi rap album released by a major label.

Start with: Vich Pardesan De, for the blueprint that a generation of Punjabi rappers followed.

2. Sidhu Moose Wala

Shubhdeep Singh Sidhu (11 June 1993 to 29 May 2022) came from the village of Moosa in Punjab. He began as a songwriter in 2016, released his first song, "G Wagon", in 2017 while living in Brampton, and started releasing songs independently in 2018. His debut album PBX 1 came out under T-Series in October 2018. After that he moved to his own label: Snitches Get Stitches was released on it in May 2020, and on 31 August 2020 he officially launched 5911 Records.

Moosetape, released in May 2021, became the first Indian album to pass 1 billion streams on Spotify. On 12 September 2021 he became the first Indian singer to perform at London's Wireless Festival. His lyrics promoting gun culture were often controversial in India, and Wikipedia notes he faced legal challenges over them.

Start with: Moosetape.

3. Karan Aujla

Jaskaran Singh Aujla was born on 18 January 1997 in Ghurala village, Ludhiana district. He started out writing songs for other singers, including "Range" for Jassi Gill. His debut album Bacthafucup reached number 20 on the Billboard Canadian Albums chart.

His second album, Making Memories (2023), was followed in January 2024 by an unplugged version of three of its songs. In February 2024 he released Street Dreams, a joint album with Mumbai rapper Divine. He announced his third album, P-Pop Culture, at a concert in Montreal on 26 July 2025. In October 2025 he featured on Ed Sheeran's EP Play (The Remixes). Aujla is also among the artists featured on TuneCore India's pricing page, alongside independent names such as Ritviz and Anuv Jain.

Start with: Making Memories.

4. AP Dhillon

Amritpal Singh Dhillon was born on 10 January 1993 in the village of Mulianwali in Punjab and is described by Wikipedia as Indo-Canadian. He started in 2019 with the single "Fake" with Shinda Kahlon, released on their own independent label, Run-Up Records. Gurinder Gill and Gminxr are part of the same label group.

"Majhail" and "Brown Munde" both topped Billboard charts. In 2020 he released Not by Chance, a collaborative album with Gurinder Gill and Money Musik, followed by the EP Hidden Gems with Gill and Gminxr in 2021. In 2023 he became the first Punjabi-language artist to perform at the Juno Awards, in Edmonton.

Start with: "Brown Munde".

5. Gurinder Gill

Gurinderbir Singh Gill was born on 14 September 1996 in Punjab and later moved to Canada. He began in 2019 with the single "Faraar" with Shinda Kahlon, with AP Dhillon credited as producer, on Run-Up Records. In June 2020 "Majhail" with AP Dhillon and Manni Sandhu topped both the UK Asian and UK Punjabi charts. In September 2020 "Brown Munde" debuted at number one on the UK Asian chart. Its video featured Nav, Sidhu Moose Wala, Money Musik and Steel Banglez.

Gill shows how the Run-Up model works. It is less a solo star with a label behind him and more a crew of artists who write, produce and release for each other.

Start with: "Majhail".

6. Shubh

Shubhneet Singh, known as Shubh, was born on 10 August 1997 in Nangal, Punjab, and is based in Brampton, Ontario. He broke through in 2021 with the single "We Rollin". His 2022 single "Baller", with producer Ikky, charted on the Canadian Hot 100.

His debut album Still Rollin (2023) debuted at number 16 on the Billboard Canadian Albums chart, and its track "Cheques" reached number 3 on Billboard India Songs. On 5 January 2024 he released his first EP, Leo, under his own label. Wikipedia reports about 5.02 billion Spotify streams as of September 2026. His Still Rollin India tour was cancelled by BookMyShow in September 2023 amid a controversy, but the tour went ahead in other countries.

Start with: Still Rollin.

7. Prabh Deep

Prabhdeep Singh was born on 26 December 1993 in Tilak Nagar, West Delhi. Producer Sez on the Beat signed him to the independent label Azadi Records. His debut album Class-Sikh was produced entirely in Sez's home studio. It reached number 1 on the iTunes India albums chart. NPR Music highlighted its portrayal, from a Sikh perspective, of the 1984 riots.

His second album, Tabia (2021), became the first Indian hip-hop album reviewed by Pitchfork. Bhram followed in 2022. Its 2023 deluxe edition was his last release with Azadi, and he left the label soon after. In 2024 he released KING Returns and his debut mixtape DSP. In January 2026 he announced Santali, a project to release one track every week for 47 weeks. He is pictured on this page performing at SXSW Sydney in October 2024. We also cover him in our guide to the Delhi indie scene.

Start with: Class-Sikh, then Tabia.

8. Rashmeet Kaur

Rashmeet Kaur was born on 8 March 1994. She came to wider notice in 2018 on The Remix, an Amazon Prime music competition judged by Sunidhi Chauhan, Amit Trivedi and Nucleya, and then signed with Raftaar's label Kalamkaar. Her 2019 EP Musafir had four songs, fusion takes on the poetry of Bulleh Shah and Shah Hussain. "Jadi Buti", her collaboration with Major Lazer, Diplo and Nucleya, appeared on Major Lazer's Grammy-nominated album Music Is the Weapon.

Her second album, Kaura, came out on 11 January 2024 with 12 songs. Her third, Parinda, followed on 11 August 2026. Indulge Express describes it as an eight-track album that brings together Punjabi folk and Sufi influences with R&B, jazz, rock and electronic sounds.

Start with: Parinda.

How to listen beyond the list

  • Begin with the Oakland era. Bohemia's records show where desi hip-hop started.
  • Move to the independent labels. Run-Up Records (AP Dhillon, Gurinder Gill) and 5911 Records (Sidhu Moose Wala) show artist-owned releasing at scale.
  • Then go to Delhi and the folk-fusion end. Prabh Deep's Azadi-era records and Rashmeet Kaur's Musafir and Parinda show the range of the scene.
