Chandresh Kudwa spent most of his career letting the guitar do the talking, and the one song of his that Spotify's Rock in India playlist keeps is the one where he sings. Fall in Place sat at No. 90 on the playlist at our 12:28 PM IST check on 16 October 2026. It has been there, at No. 89 or No. 90, in every Rock in India snapshot this desk has saved since 2:11 AM IST on 13 October.
It is a quiet slot near the bottom of a 100-song list, easy to scroll past. I think it is one of the more interesting choices on the playlist. Kudwa built his name on instrumental guitar records and a long run as a band and session guitarist in Mumbai. Fall in Place is a 2024 single on which Apple Music credits him with the vocals, the backing vocals, the bass, the guitar, the songwriting, the production, the recording, the mix and the master. Only the drums belong to someone else.

The guitar came first
If you know Kudwa's name from before streaming, you probably know it from bands. Indulge Express listed Freedom, Dream Out Loud and the collaborative project Axe-tortion among the groups he had played in when it interviewed him in 2019. Rolling Stone India, in April 2025, described him as a man who "previously shredded in rock bands like Dream Out Loud" and contributed guitar for A.R. Rahman, Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy and Amit Trivedi. The same piece calls him "Mumbai's guitar hero", a phrase that tells you how the city's scene already sees him.
His own records were built around the instrument. Conqueror is a nine-track album; one of its songs, Good Life, features Mattias IA Eklundh of the Swedish band Freak Kitchen. Free Spirit, released on 29 November 2018, put him with bassist Mohini Dey and drummer Gino Banks, a pairing Rolling Stone India would later describe as a virtuoso and a "veteran drumming powerhouse". No Treble's Corey Brown called it "a pretty amazing instrumental rock record". Apple Music's own album note describes "dexterous, crowd-pleasing arena rock", with Kudwa "taking centre stage as one of the country's most expressive guitarists".
What struck me most in the coverage of that period is not the praise but a line about melody. "I feel music has to be hummable, whether it's an instrumental or a vocal track," he told Indulge Express. "I may have a lot of shred, heavy, tricky, complicated pieces of music, but if you look at my melodies, almost all of them are hummable." Read now, that sounds like a man describing a singer he had not yet become.
He did sometimes hand the microphone to others. One Chance to Live, a 2016 single, is credited to Kudwa featuring Siddharth Basrur and Rahul Hariharan, with the ℗ held by OKListen Media rather than by him. And in October 2021 Rolling Stone India's Fresh Indie Fridays column picked up Days of Isolation, another instrumental with Gino Banks, which Kudwa said captured "the emotional roller coaster experienced by me over the last year and a half".
2024: the year the words arrived
The turn is easy to date. On 14 June 2024 Kudwa released I Wanna Play the Guitar, and it opens, according to the lyric excerpt Apple Music prints, in Hindi: "Duniya main ek cheez jo hai mujhe pasand / Woh hai sound of distorted guitars." That first version carries a ℗ in the name of TheGuitarThing, his teaching business. Four weeks later, on 12 July, came an English version, starting "One thing in this world that makes me come alive / Is the sound of distorted guitars." It is a funny, honest way to begin a singing career: the first thing he sings about is the guitar.
Then the singles came every month or so. Fall in Place on 23 August, Keep Rock n Roll Alive on 27 September, Someday on 25 October. On 24 January 2025 they were collected, with a new song called Island City, as the Through the Noise EP. Rolling Stone India reported in April 2025 that he would play songs from it on dates in Pune, New Delhi and Mumbai that spring, with a band that included his 13-year-old daughter, guitarist Eva Kudwa, plus bassist Alanis Rodrigues and Gino Banks. "She's not just a solid guitar player but also a great singer, so we get to trade harmonies, play twin leads," he told the magazine.
His own website now speaks of his "evolution from a pure instrumentalist to a versatile vocalist-guitarist". That is self-description, and I would not lean on it alone. But the credit sheets back it up. On every one of the five songs on Through the Noise, Apple Music lists the same credits: Kudwa on vocals and background vocals, guitar and bass, as songwriter, and as producer and mixing, mastering and recording engineer. Gino Banks on drums. Nobody else.
Why Rock in India got the right song
Of the five, Fall in Place is the one Rock in India's editors kept, and I think they chose well. It is the longest track on the EP at 4:56, which puts it right around the 4:50 median running time we measured across the playlist when we looked at Indian indie song length.
It also opens on the most revealing lines on the record. "It's time I started dreaming once again / A lot of time has passed I don't know when," is how Apple Music's lyric excerpt begins. Plain words. From a debut singer in his twenties they would be ordinary. From a guitarist who spent decades letting his instrument do the talking, they read as a statement about the song itself.
There is a useful comparison much higher up the same list. Sutej Singh, the Solan guitarist whose instrumental progressive rock we profiled earlier, has Mayflower at No. 7 and Oceans Apart at No. 34 at the same snapshot. The playlist plainly has room for a guitar hero who never sings. That it took Kudwa in with a vocal song, rather than a cut from Free Spirit, tells you this is not just a nod to his reputation. Somebody heard the singer and kept him.
Where I'm less sure
I keep coming back to the credit sheet, and not only as praise. Who holds the ℗ is something this publication tracks closely, in pieces like who owns Indian indie music masters. Fall in Place and the EP carry exactly that, with no label in between, which is the route we laid out in releasing music without a record label. Control is not the issue.
The issue is the room. In that 2019 Indulge Express interview, he was generous about what Mohini Dey and Gino Banks brought to Free Spirit: "Both of them are very creative so they brought in many ideas and rhythmic patterns which otherwise, I wouldn't have thought of." On Through the Noise, the only other name on the sheet is the drummer. A first-time lead vocalist who also produces, mixes and masters his own voice has nobody in the chair whose job is to tell him when a take is not there yet. I am not saying the record suffers for it. It is the question I would put to any guitarist making this move, and the credits do not answer it.
The latest single under his own name in Apple Music's catalogue at our check points somewhere else, which I find encouraging. Don't Walk Away, out on 15 March 2025 and described by Rolling Stone India as "an openhearted, uplifting hard rock song", lists three outside songwriters on Apple Music: Veronica Mehta, Rishipal Rekhi and Surrinder Parwana, with Kudwa as performer and producer and Banks again on drums. After a year of doing every job himself, he let other writers in.
What this publication thinks
Fall in Place deserves its place, and so does the man. For anyone coming to Chandresh Kudwa through Rock in India, start there, then go back to Free Spirit to hear what the guitar was doing before it had words to answer.
What I want next is a Kudwa record with a second pair of ears on the vocal, whether that is an outside producer, a mix engineer, or the daughter he already trades harmonies with on stage. Rock in India has kept him at No. 89 or No. 90 since at least 13 October. The more interesting test is whether the next sung song climbs.
