Indian rock bands have written original music in English, Hindi, Malayalam, Kannada and more since the 1980s, and the 12 acts below are a good place to start. They run from Rock Machine, whose 1988 album is widely hailed as India's first all-original rock record, to Kryptos, Girish and the Chronicles and The Local Train, who carry the sound to European festivals and streaming playlists today.

We picked bands that wrote their own songs, built an audience through live shows and left records that new listeners can still find. The list follows a rough timeline, so you can hear how Indian rock moved from college stages and MTV to Wacken, Glastonbury and America's Got Talent.

Where Indian rock began

Rock and roll records were easy to find in India in the 1950s and 1960s, and beat groups such as the Mystiks from Bombay, the Beat-X from Madras and The Cavaliers and Calcutta-16 from Calcutta played the college circuit. Most bands of that era played versions of Western hits. According to the Wikipedia history of Indian rock, that covers tradition held until the 1980s, when it became more common for bands to write their own songs.

Rolling Stone India's list of iconic Indian rock acts also credits the band High, led by Dilip Balakrishnan, with pioneering original songwriting in the 1970s. The bands below are the ones that turned that habit of writing originals into a lasting scene.

1. Rock Machine and Indus Creed (Mumbai, 1984)

Indus Creed began in 1984 as Rock Machine, a Mumbai band that started out playing hard rock by groups such as Thin Lizzy, Deep Purple and Rush. They were one of the earliest Indian bands to tour the country widely, playing colleges and independent rock festivals, and they soon began writing their own songs.

Their 1988 album Rock'n'Roll Renegade is hailed as India's first all-original rock album, and it was followed by The Second Coming in 1990. In 1993 the band renamed itself Indus Creed and added instruments such as tabla and sarangi. The video for Pretty Child became a hit and won the band an MTV Asia Video Music Award. They split in 1997 and regrouped with a new line-up in 2010. Rolling Stone India included Top of the Rock and Pretty Child in its 2014 list of the greatest Indian rock songs.

2. Indian Ocean (New Delhi, 1990)

Indian Ocean are widely recognised as the pioneers of fusion rock in India. Their sound mixes ragas, folk songs and rock guitars and drums, and the band recorded its first demo after guitarist Susmit Sen sold his electric guitar to pay for it. The self-titled debut came out in 1993 and sold over 40,000 copies within a year.

Kandisa (2000) gave them their best-known songs, and Rolling Stone India picked both Kandisa and Ma Rewa for its 2014 list of great Indian rock songs. The band also composed the soundtrack for Anurag Kashyap's film Black Friday. Since 2010 they have worked without record labels, and they released the album 16/330 Khajoor Road online for free. Bassist and vocalist Rahul Ram is the one member who also played on the debut album. Read our full Indian Ocean band profile for the albums in order.

3. Parikrama (New Delhi, 1991)

Parikrama formed in Delhi in 1991 and became known for high-energy live shows that mix rock with tabla, flute and violin. They are unusual for a band of their size because they have never released a full studio album. They prefer to give their music away for free and invite listeners to download their recordings.

In 2007 they toured with Iron Maiden and played the Download Festival in England. Their 2001 song But It Rained is one of the best-known Indian rock anthems, and Rolling Stone India included it in its 2014 list of the greatest Indian rock songs. Lead guitarist Sonam Sherpa died in February 2020, and in October that year the band relaunched But It Rained with his full guitar solo.

4. Pentagram (Mumbai, 1994)

Pentagram started as a rock and alternative rock band and moved towards electronica and industrial sounds. The band won the major rock competitions at IIT Kanpur, IIT Delhi and IIT Bombay, and their win at Livewire, the band contest at Mood Indigo, led to a record deal and the 1996 debut We Are Not Listening.

In 2005 Pentagram became the first Indian band to play the Glastonbury Festival. Their third album, It's OK, It's All Good (2007), came out on their own label, Pentagram Music, and its single Voice won Song of the Year at the Jack Daniel's Annual Indian Rock Awards. Frontman Vishal Dadlani is also one half of the film music duo Vishal–Shekhar, but Pentagram's records remain a separate, guitar-driven body of work.

5. Thermal and a Quarter (Bengaluru, 1996)

Thermal and a Quarter, or TAAQ, call their music "Bangalore rock", a classic rock style that is Indian in "subtle, inescapable ways". The name is a joke about the line-up: three Malayalis plus one member who is a quarter Malayali.

TAAQ opened for Deep Purple in Bengaluru in 2001 and for Guns N' Roses in 2012. They released seven studio albums by their 20th anniversary in 2016 and an eighth, A World Gone Mad, in 2020. Guitarist and singer Bruce Lee Mani won Guitarist of the Year at the Jack Daniel's Rock Awards in 2009 and 2012. In 2010 the band opened a music school in Koramangala called the Taaqademy.

6. Motherjane (Kochi, 1996)

Motherjane formed in Kochi in 1996 to fill in for a band that pulled out of a college festival. They blend progressive rock with Carnatic and world music, and singer Suraj Mani wrote their first original songs after joining in 2000.

Their debut Insane Biography (2002) and the follow-up Maktub (2008) made them one of the most respected rock bands in the country, and Rolling Stone India highlighted Maktub as a standout album of its year. After a 12-year break the band reunited for a 15th anniversary tour of Maktub and played festivals including Hornbill and Mahindra Independence Rock between 2024 and 2026. Our Motherjane band history covers the line-up changes in detail.

7. Kryptos (Bengaluru, 1998)

Kryptos are a heavy metal band formed in Bengaluru in 1998 by guitarist Nolan Lewis and bassist Ganesh Krishnaswamy. Their sound draws on 1980s metal, the New Wave of British Heavy Metal and thrash, with influences that include Iron Maiden and Judas Priest.

They opened for Iron Maiden at Rock 'N India in Bengaluru in 2009 in front of almost 17,000 fans. In 2010 they became the first Indian metal band to complete a European tour, and in 2013 they became the first Indian heavy metal band to play Wacken Open Air. Their seventh studio album, Decimator, came out in 2024. For the full catalogue, see our guide to Kryptos band members and albums.

8. Swarathma (Mysore and Bengaluru, 2002)

Swarathma formed in Mysore in 2002 and are now based in Bengaluru. They blend Indian folk and classical music with blues rock and reggae, and their lyrics cover personal journeys as well as social and political themes. They are described as one of India's biggest folk rock bands.

The band swept the Jack Daniel's Indian Rock Awards in 2009, winning Band, Song and Album of the Year. They have released three studio albums: Swarathma (2009), Topiwalleh (2012) and Raah-e-Fakira (2018). Rolling Stone India also notes their fundraising concerts for a number of NGOs.

9. Avial (Kerala, 2003)

Avial built the style they call "Alternative Malayali rock" by setting Malayalam lyrics to rock music. Their 2003 single Nada Nada was their first breakthrough, and their self-titled 2008 album sold over 45,000 copies even though every song is in Malayalam.

That album won six of the seven Jack Daniel's Rock Awards in 2008, including album, song and band of the year. Guitarist Rex Vijayan had earlier played with Motherjane, which links two of the most important Kerala bands on this list. Avial later wrote songs for Malayalam films such as Salt N' Pepper and 22 Female Kottayam.

10. Soulmate (Shillong, 2003)

Soulmate are a blues band from Shillong, led by singer and guitarist Tipriti Kharbangar and guitarist Rudy Wallang. They played their first concert in February 2003 at the Roots Festival in Umiam, Meghalaya.

They represented India at the International Blues Challenge in Memphis in 2007 and 2010 and opened for Carlos Santana in Delhi in 2012. At the 2009 Jack Daniel's Rock Awards, Tipriti won Best Female Vocalist and Rudy won Best Guitar Player. Rolling Stone India lists four albums: Shillong, Moving On, Ten Stories Up and Give Love (2020).

11. The Local Train (Chandigarh, 2008)

The Local Train formed in Chandigarh in 2008 and moved to New Delhi. They are known for Hindi and Urdu lyrics, and for most of their early years they managed themselves and released songs online. Their debut album Aalas Ka Pedh came out in 2015, followed by Vaaqif in 2018. Both albums have been among the top five most-streamed rock albums on Apple Music India.

The band now performs as guitarist and singer Paras Thakur, bassist Ramit Mehra and drummer Sahil Sarin, after singer Raman Negi left in April 2022. They remain a regular name at Indian festivals, and our Local Train band profile has the full story.

12. Girish and the Chronicles (Sikkim, 2009)

Girish and the Chronicles, or GATC, formed in Sikkim in 2009 around singer Girish Pradhan and have been based in Bengaluru since 2013. They play 1980s-style hard rock and heavy metal and released their early singles independently on YouTube.

In 2021 they signed a multi-album deal with Frontiers Records, the first Indian band to sign with the Italian label, and their third album Hail to the Heroes followed in February 2022. They supported Guns N' Roses in Abu Dhabi in July 2023 and toured Europe for 40 days in late 2024. In June 2025 they appeared on season 20 of America's Got Talent, where all four judges voted them through to the live shows.
