Indus Creed is a Mumbai rock band that began in 1984 as Rock Machine and is one of India's oldest rock bands, according to The Hindu. Its best-known songs include "Pretty Child", "Top of the Rock", "Rock 'n' Roll Renegade" and "Fireflies", and its core members have been singer Uday Benegal, keyboardist Zubin Balaporia and guitarist Mahesh Tinaikar. Tinaikar, who founded the band, died in Mumbai on 15 October 2026 at the age of 63 after a suspected heart attack. This guide covers the band's history, members, albums and songs, and why Tinaikar mattered so much to Indian rock.
Remembering Mahesh Tinaikar
Rolling Stone India reported that Tinaikar died in Mumbai following a suspected heart attack, as confirmed by his bandmates, and that he was 63. The Hindu gave the date as 15 October 2026. He was a guitarist and music teacher, and in 1984 he formed Rock Machine, inspired by bands such as Deep Purple and The Who.
Tributes came quickly. Vishal Dadlani of Pentagram wrote on Instagram that "India lost a true LEGEND today" and that "every single rockandroller since #RockMachine" owed Tinaikar a debt of gratitude "for lighting up the way that we couldn't even imagine until they walked it". The Hindu reported that Farhan Akhtar also posted a tribute.
In a 2018 interview with The Hindu, Tinaikar remembered how hard the early years were. "We didn't have a music scene," he said. "We would just be called for the odd college show: us and maybe two more bands." Outside the band, Rolling Stone India notes that he played on songs by singer Gary Lawyer and later started a solo project.
The Rock Machine years
Rock Machine was formed in Bombay in 1984. According to Wikipedia, the founding line-up was Tinaikar, Mark Selwyn, Ian Santamaria, Aftab Currim and Suresh Bhadricha. The classic line-up that followed, as listed by Rolling Stone India, had Uday Benegal on vocals, Zubin Balaporia on keyboards, Mark Selwyn on bass, Jayesh Gandhi on guitar and Mark Menezes on drums, alongside Tinaikar.
The band toured India widely and released its debut album, Rock 'n' Roll Renegade, in 1988. Wikipedia notes that it has been hailed as the first album of all-original rock music by an Indian band. A second album, The Second Coming, followed in 1990.
The crowds grew fast. Tinaikar told The New York Times in 1989: "Two years ago, an Indian band couldn't draw an audience of more than 800 people. Now we get 10,000 in a stadium." Hindustan Times reports that the band also toured West Asia, the United Kingdom and the Soviet Union, including a six-city Soviet tour in 1988.
Becoming Indus Creed
In the early 1990s the band renamed itself Indus Creed and began adding more Indian traditional instruments to its sound, Rolling Stone India writes. Wikipedia dates the name change to 1993. "Fireflies", which Rolling Stone India calls the band's 1993 breakout single, came from this period.
The video for "Pretty Child" became the band's calling card. A 2016 report in The Hindu noted that MTV ranked it the ninth best video of 1993. The self-titled album Indus Creed followed in 1995, with songs such as the hard-hitting "Trapped". Rolling Stone India's obituary links "Pretty Child" to that record, while Wikipedia dates the song to 1990. The band split up in the late 1990s, and Benegal spent time in the United States.
The 2010 reunion and Evolve
In 2009 Benegal, back in India, formed the acoustic project Whirling Kalapas with Tinaikar and multi-instrumentalist Sankarshan Kini. By 2010 Indus Creed had reunited, with Tinaikar, Benegal and Balaporia joined by drummer Jai Row Kavi and bassist Rushad Mistry. Wikipedia records the relaunch at Hard Rock Cafe in Mumbai on 7 October 2010, followed by a Reboot tour, and an Indian Recording Arts Academy Hall of Fame honour in June 2011.
The comeback album Evolve came out on 21 April 2012 on Universal Music. According to Wikipedia, it was mixed by Tim Palmer and mastered by Andy VanDette. Rolling Stone India describes it as a return to the band's rock roots with a progressive edge, heard on songs like "Dissolve", and a grand new version of "Fireflies". At the Jack Daniel's JD Rock Awards in 2013, the band won Best Band, Best Keyboardist and Best Drummer.
Tinaikar left Whirling Kalapas in 2014, citing creative differences, but stayed in Indus Creed. The band released singles such as "Thief" in 2014 and then focused on live shows. Most recently it supported Def Leppard at their Mumbai concert in March 2026, and played an intimate trio set at a restored monastery in Khandala in April 2026.

Why Indus Creed matters
Indian rock had very little infrastructure when Rock Machine started, as Tinaikar's own memories of odd college shows make clear. The band's all-original debut, its stadium crowds by the late 1980s and its MTV success in the 1990s showed that an Indian rock band could write its own songs and find a large audience. Our guide to Indian rock bands traces the acts that followed, and our pieces on the Mumbai indie scene and Independence Rock cover the city and the festival culture that grew up around bands like this one.
