Search for the Mumbai indie scene and most of what comes back is a list of bars with a cover charge next to each one. That helps on a Friday night. It doesn't tell you who built the scene, which labels keep it going, or which artists to hear before you go out. This guide covers all of that. Every fact about an artist links to a source at the end of the page.
Mumbai matters to Indian independent music for one simple reason: the city has the industry. Film studios, major-label offices, college festivals and small rooms all sit in the same city. Bands that started out playing covers in college ended up writing film soundtracks. Rappers from the chawls went on to run their own labels. The rock, metal, electronic and hip-hop scenes have all lasted here for decades because the city keeps throwing up places to play.
A short history of independent music in Mumbai
The rock years: Rock Machine, Indus Creed and Independence Rock
Modern Mumbai rock starts with Indus Creed. The band formed in 1984 as Rock Machine and renamed itself in 1993. It split in 1997 and came back in 2010 with a new lineup. In 2014, Rolling Stone India's list of the "25 Greatest Indian Rock Songs of the last 25 Years" included two of its songs, "Top of the Rock" (1988) and "Pretty Child" (1990).
Bands of that era had a home stage in Independence Rock, the long-running Mumbai rock festival. We have covered its history in a separate piece (linked below). It also shows up in other bands' stories. Mumbai rock band Zero played its last official show at Independence Rock XXIII Mumbai on 30 August 2008.
College festivals as the launchpad
IIT Bombay's cultural festival, Mood Indigo, gave bands a first stage and sometimes a record deal. Zero launched in July 1998 with a show at Mood Indigo's rock event. The band released Albummed in 2000, Hook in 2002 and Procrastination in 2005. According to Wikipedia, it still plays reunion shows, usually at NH7 Weekender.
Pentagram has the clearest example. The band formed in Mumbai in 1994 and won rock competitions at IIT Kanpur, IIT Delhi and IIT Bombay. Its Wikipedia entry says that winning Livewire, Mood Indigo's annual band competition, got it a record deal.
Pentagram and the electronic turn
Pentagram is fronted by Vishal Dadlani, one half of the film-music duo Vishal–Shekhar. The band shows how Mumbai's indie and film worlds overlap. Its second album, Up (2002), moved the band into electronic rock. In 2005, Pentagram became the first Indian band to play the Glastonbury Festival in the UK. It released its third album, It's OK, It's All Good (2007), on its own label, Pentagram Music, which made it an early Indian example of a band releasing its own records.
Guitarist Randolph Correia also formed Shaa'ir and Func in Mumbai in 2007, an alternative electronic duo with Monica Dogra. Electronic music never stayed in clubs in this city. It found its way into band music too.
Mumbai metal: Demonic Resurrection and the heavy underground
Ask anyone about Indian extreme metal and Demonic Resurrection will come up. The blackened death metal band formed in Mumbai in 2000 and is led by Sahil "The Demonstealer" Makhija on vocals and rhythm guitar. It has released five studio albums and one EP. Its fourth album, The Demon King, came out in July 2014 on Candlelight Records, with Universal Music distributing it in India.
The band has represented India at Wacken Open Air in Germany (2014) and has played Inferno Metal Festival in Norway (2010), Brutal Assault in the Czech Republic (2010) and MetalDays in Slovenia (2015). In February 2025 it played Bangalore Open Air and hinted at a 25th-anniversary tour.
Heavy music in Mumbai goes past one band. Vocalist Siddharth Basrur started out in the city's indie scene with the band Kinky Ski Munky. He fronts the Mumbai progressive metal band Goddess Gagged and has also sung on Bollywood soundtracks, including Haunted 3D, Players and David. His career follows the same indie-to-film path that Pentagram's members took.
Gully rap: how Mumbai hip-hop changed Indian music
No other Mumbai scene has grown as fast as hip-hop. Divine (Vivian Wilson Fernandes, born 1990 in Andheri) is credited as one of the pioneers who took Indian hip-hop mainstream. His lyrics draw on growing up in Mumbai's chawls. He first got attention with "Yeh Mera Bombay" in 2013. He performed at the Blue Frog Festival 2014 in Mumbai, where Sony Music India noticed him and signed him soon after. His breakthrough came in 2015 with "Mere Gully Mein", featuring fellow Mumbai rapper Naezy (Naved Shaikh, born 1993).
The two rappers' lives inspired Gully Boy (2019), Zoya Akhtar's Hindi film about a street rapper from Dharavi, played by Ranveer Singh. American rapper Nas was an executive producer. The film premiered at the Berlin International Film Festival on 9 February 2019.
On 20 August 2019, Nas's Mass Appeal Records and Universal Music India launched Mass Appeal India and signed Divine. His album Punya Paap came out on that label on 3 December 2020. On 12 December 2020, Divine became the first Indian rapper to feature on Spotify's Times Square billboard in New York, after the album reached number one on Apple Music India.
Labels built by artists: Gully Gang and Bantai Records
The most important change for independent musicians is that Mumbai rappers started building their own labels. In February 2019, Divine announced Gully Gang Entertainment, co-founded with Chaitanya Kataria. It includes a record label, Gully Gang Records, set up to find and produce hip-hop talent from the Mumbai area. The label's first group release, "Gully Gang Cypher" (22 May 2019), featured the rap group Aavrutti and solo rappers D'Evil, MC Altaf and Shah Rule, with producer Karan Kanchan. The compilation Shutdown followed in 2020. The label later signed Sammohit, Afkap, 99side and Deeking. In November 2024, Divine and Gully Gang announced Gully Fest 2024.
Emiway Bantai (Bilal Shaikh, born 1995) took another route. He has stayed independent and built his audience through social media, with singles such as "Machayenge" (2019) and "Firse Machayenge" (2020). He has worked with American rappers including Macklemore and Snoop Dogg. In 2021 he started his own independent label, Bantai Records. He told Rolling Stone India that the label gives artists "complete freedom to decide what they want to release, when and where". In its first year, the label's artists included Hellac, Loka, Meme Machine, Minta, Swaalina, Thoratt, Tony James and Young Galib.
For independent musicians, the takeaway is that in Mumbai's hip-hop scene, artist-run labels are now a real alternative to waiting for a major label to sign you.
Where to hear live independent music in Mumbai
Venues open and close quickly, so check before you go. Here is how current city guides describe the main rooms (October 2026):
antiSOCIAL, Lower Parel
City guides call antiSOCIAL, now in the Mathuradas Mill Compound, the busiest small venue for alternative music. It books indie bands, hip-hop, metal, techno and house. Most shows are ticketed and standing-room, so buy in advance.
Bonobo, Bandra West
Bonobo, off Linking Road, has supported independent music since 2008, according to a 2026 city guide. Its weeknight gigs mix jazz, funk, soul and indie, and its weekend nights lean electronic.
G5A, Mahalaxmi
G5A is a black-box space for experimental music, singer-songwriters and seated listening shows. Go here for a quiet set where people actually listen.
The Quarter, Royal Opera House
The Quarter, inside the restored Royal Opera House at Girgaon, runs serious one-night sets in a sit-down room. Programming is curated by veterans including drummer Ranjit Barot.
The Habitat, Khar West
The Habitat is a grassroots room with open mics most weeks. It's often where new acts get their first stage time.
For dates, Rolling Stone India runs a gig calendar covering Mumbai, Delhi, Pune, Bengaluru and Kolkata.
Who is rising: how to follow the next wave
We won't make up a "next big thing" list. Here is where new Mumbai names are actually turning up, with sources:
The Gully Gang roster. Sammohit, Afkap, 99side and Deeking joined after the first wave of D'Evil, MC Altaf, Shah Rule and Aavrutti. The Bantai Records roster. Hellac, Loka, Meme Machine, Minta, Swaalina, Thoratt, Tony James and Young Galib were the label's first-year artists. The rooms above. antiSOCIAL and The Habitat book unknown acts far more often than the big-ticket venues do.

What makes Mumbai different from Bengaluru or Delhi
Bengaluru's scene is built on a long rock and metal culture and lots of mid-sized venues (see our Bengaluru guide). Mumbai's edge is that it sits next to the film and label industry. Pentagram's Vishal Dadlani, Shaa'ir and Func's Randolph Correia and Siddharth Basrur all show how indie careers here move into film work. That proximity has a downside. Commercial music is never far away, and a Reddit thread from Mumbai music fans complains that clubs default to commercial playlists. Independent gigs in Mumbai are something you have to seek out, and that's why a guide like this is useful.
