From Solan in Himachal Pradesh, Sutej Singh has built one of the clearest instrumental progressive-rock catalogues in Indian indie: eight-track debut The Emerging in 2018, a Rolling Stone India Editor's Pick comeback single in 2023, and the eight-song rebirth Restless | Relentless in 2025. As of our Rock in India snapshot (rii-a29, 14 October 2026), "Mayflower" sits at No. 7 and "Oceans Apart" at No. 34 on Spotify's Rock in India playlist. This is how a Solan guitarist-composer turned Instagram session finds into arena-scale prog that still holds national playlist real estate.

Solan, Instagram and The Emerging

Rolling Stone India's June 2018 debut feature frames Singh as a Solan guitarist who treated Instagram as an "artist finder app." For The Emerging he recruited U.K. prog band Haken's Raymond Hearne on the title track, Pendragon veteran Scott Higham on other drums, bassist Kylan Amos, Swedish guitarist Peter Henningsson on "Timeless," Australian composer Leon Ross for orchestral colour and American flautist Gina Luciani. Singh told RSI he wrote the demo parts except drums and bass, then let collaborators share ideas. The same piece says he spent about four years making the record and channels Dream Theater, Pink Floyd and Steve Vai. Indulg Express (June 2018) adds that Oceans Apart's melody began in 2014 on Guitar Pro, that German mixer Christian Moos (Space Lab Studio) mixed the album, and that the set topped Apple Music India's Rock charts - beating Queen and John Mayer catalogue titles in that snapshot - after Katrina Kaif shared it on Instagram.

Apple Music still lists the eight-track Emerging sequence: Overture, The Comeback Trail, Timeless, Come Into Existence, The Emerging, Oceans Apart, Walk My Path, Revelations. The original ℗ line reads Pinecone Records India; a later Apple reissue line carries Sutej Singh. That campus-to-catalogue arc sits next to the DIY roots of Rock in India and how independent bands build their sound: write the long form first, then prove it live.

Land of Gold and the Steve Vai door

Nearly five years after Emerging, "Land of Gold" arrived 16 July 2023 (Apple: Instrumental; ℗ Sutej Singh). Rolling Stone India made it Editor's Pick on 26 July 2023: Middle Eastern-leaning string colour via Facundo Negri, guitar leads over roughly four and a half minutes, with Paarth Koser (drums/percussion), Kylan Amos (bass) and Amanda Burgos (violin). The Farheen Fatima video was shot at Suraj Theater in Panchkula. Singh's own site credits engineering by Ranbeer Sidhu at Blue Olive Studio, Mohali, and mix/master by Ayan De.

December 2023 put him on the Steve Vai Inviolate India bill in Mumbai and Bengaluru. t2ONLINE (June 2024) and Rolling Stone India both confirm the opening slot. Singh was frank with both outlets: opening acts and headliners rarely "chill" backstage; Mumbai soundcheck went haywire and the set started early, costume unfinished - yet the guitar-aware room still responded, and watching Vai from the wings became the night's real education. RSI quotes him wanting the gig as soon as the India tour was announced, and valuing an audience that already knew instrumental guitar music existed.

Summer Tour 2024 and the long wait for a fuller set

Rolling Stone India (7 June 2024) and t2ONLINE mapped the Summer Tour 2024 run: The Piano Man, Eldeco Centre, New Delhi (7 June); High Spirits, Pune (14 June); antiSOCIAL, Mumbai (15 June); Bengaluru later that month. Singh told RSI the set would stretch toward 90 minutes - Emerging staples plus unreleased music such as "Mayflower" from a then-planned EP - with orchestral sections rearranged for the stage. Odd-time shred pieces like "The Emerging," "Walk My Path" and "The Comeback Trail" remained harder to nail under lights than the crowd staple "Oceans Apart."

India Today Digital's October 2024 interview (reprinted via PratapDarpan), ahead of Bandland 2.0 in Bengaluru (23-24 November 2024, BookMyShow Live), is the clearest statement of craft: composition as structure, tension and release more than diary confession; instrumental music as room for the listener's imagination; a niche embraced inside a vocal-driven industry, with plans to add vocals and collaborations. He again refused the Himachal "mountains made my music" cliche - rooms and craft first, landscape as a break. Influences named there include Dream Theater, Porcupine Tree, Opeth and Western classical writing. The Hindu later reported that a live "Oceans Apart" video from Bandland crossed roughly 100,000 streams in ten days and later passed a million views - rare territory for original Indian guitar music.

Kaadambari and Restless | Relentless

"Kaadambari" featuring Nandini Srikar (11 February 2025, Apple) opened the vocal door Ticket Fairy and India Today had previewed: progressive rock framed by Indian classical singing; Ticket Fairy credits co-composition with Srikar, lyrics by Snehdeep Singh Kalsi and tabla by Arpit Manaktala. The full album Restless | Relentless followed on 25 April 2025 - eight tracks, roughly 37 minutes on Spotify/Apple, ℗ Sutej Singh.

Ticket Fairy's May 2025 album piece quotes Singh's press lines: the record as "answer to that uncertainty," a "testament to resilience," and "more than just an album, it's a rebirth." Title words as two sides of one coin - restlessness as impatient drive, relentlessness as stubborn follow-through. Track map: "Flight in the Dark" (orchestral intro; Singh imagined golden birds in black space); "Bring to Light" (prog plus synths, vocals by Emma Pogosova); the title cut; "Mayflower" (ruthless riff, wistful keys, racing strings - now Rock in India No. 7); "Heart of Tomorrow" (guitar interlude into Kaadambari); "Kaadambari"; "For the Lost Ones" (a 2012 melodic seed finally housed; Singh calls it among his most personal pieces and favourite solos); "Kaadambari (Instrumental)." Album credits list Paarth Koser on drums, Aditya Negi on bass, Jashandeep Reehal on orchestration, guitars/bass tracked with Ranbeer Sidhu at Pracheen Kala Kendra (Chandigarh), mix/master by Vivek Thomas at VTP Studios.

Restless Relentless on the road

The Hindu's Anurag Tagat (17 November 2025) caught the Bengaluru stop: confetti and fireworks on the first song, technical resets the crowd forgave, and a set spanning Restless | Relentless and Emerging - "Comeback Trail," "Mayflower," "Land of Gold," "Oceans Apart," plus a Pink Floyd / David Gilmour tribute. The five-piece that night: Aditya Negi, Paarth Koser, Disha Goswami, John Jeenu and Singh. Motherjane guitarist Baiju Dharmajan guested on "Kadambari" and "Heart of Tomorrow," standing in for Srikar's vocal line with Carnatic guitar colour - a dream booking Singh called hanging out "like buddies." Only select dates carry the quintet; elsewhere the trio is logistics and budget. Fans, Singh said, now ask for rhythm guitar beside the lead; violin stands in for the string section he still cannot tour. Tour close was plotted for Shimla (7 December) and Chandigarh (28 December 2025). Streaming cities he named to The Hindu - London, Chicago, then Bengaluru - are already pointing management toward international dates in 2026.

That live economy is the same problem Thermal and a Quarter and other long-haul Indian rock acts know: fuller arrangements cost real money on the road. Singh's answer has been to grow the pull until the five-piece is not a loss leader.

Best songs: where to start

  • "Mayflower" (2025): Rock in India No. 7 - the Restless | Relentless riff statement on Bandcamp and Spotify.
  • "Oceans Apart" (2018): Rock in India No. 34; Emerging centrepiece; Bandland live clip that crossed a million views (The Hindu).
  • "Land of Gold" (2023): RSI Editor's Pick comeback - Middle Eastern string colour over urgent prog guitar.
  • "Kaadambari" (2025, with Nandini Srikar): classical voice inside the prog frame; Baiju Dharmajan's live substitute on the Bengaluru tour stop.
  • "The Emerging" / "The Comeback Trail" / "Walk My Path" (2018): the odd-time, shred-forward Emerging deep cuts RSI flagged as hardest live.
  • "Flight in the Dark" / "For the Lost Ones" (2025): album overture and the 2012 melody finally given a home.
  • "Bring to Light" (2025, vocals Emma Pogosova): the synth-edged vocal chapter on Restless | Relentless.

Why Sutej Singh matters

Indian rock maps still under-count instrumentalists who never needed a frontperson to hold a room. Singh sits beside the progressive and guitar-forward lane that also holds Girish and The Chronicles' metal reach, Agam's classical-crossover ambition and Antariksh's Hindi prog architecture - yet his catalogue is almost entirely wordless until Kaadambari and Bring to Light. Solan to Mohali drives for tracking, Instagram as a global session board, a Pinecone debut that topped an Apple Rock chart snapshot, a Vai support slot that was chaotic and clarifying, and a 2025 album that refused to stay an EP: that is the through-line. Mayflower at No. 7 on Rock in India is not a novelty placement. It is proof that instrumental progressive rock from Himachal can still occupy the same national playlist infrastructure as Hindi alt-rock and metal singles - and that the Indian metal and heavy conversation is wider than vocals alone.
