Seven years after Girish Pradhan first recorded the idea, "A New Spark" has finally found its record. The Sikkim-born, Bengaluru-based hard rock band's third 2026 preview of Disintegrate is the song where the old Girish And The Chronicles and the new one shake hands.

Girish And The Chronicles A New Spark is a four-minute-fifty-one-second single released on 17 September 2026, the fifth of ten tracks on Disintegrate, which Frontiers Music Srl will release on 20 November 2026. Pradhan calls it "the highlight of the album for all of us." The band, known on stages and in press as GATC, is no stranger to our pages: in our 13 October 2026 check of Spotify's Rock in India playlist, their 2023 Frontiers recording "Ride to Hell" sits at No. 19. "A New Spark" was not on that snapshot, but it is the clearest sign of where the band is heading next.

A 2019 idea that waited for the right album

The most telling detail about "A New Spark" is its age. In the Frontiers press release, Pradhan says: "It was a small idea that I had recorded back in 2019 during the 'Rock The Highway' era, and now it has finally found its home in our new album."

That places the song's first spark next to Rock the Highway, the 13-song, hour-long album that Rolling Stone India's Anurag Tagat described in May 2020 as "pretty much pure mayhem for any fan of Eighties rock and metal." That record came out on 27 April 2020 through UK label Plastichead and Denmark's Lions Pride Music. Since then the band has moved to the Italian label Frontiers, which has released Hail to the Heroes (Apple Music dates it 11 February 2022) and a Frontiers edition of Back on Earth (27 January 2023), the album that carries "Ride to Hell." The Rockpit's Mark Diggins, who spoke with Pradhan after a show in Perth earlier this year, calls Disintegrate "the third installment of their three-album deal with Frontiers."

Holding an idea that long and then building it into a heavier record says something about the band's patience. The song was not written to chase a new sound. It was kept until there was an album it could belong to.

The meaning behind A New Spark

Pradhan is direct about it: "There are times in life when we feel stuck, surrounded by negativity, and desperate for new beginnings. 'A New Spark' is a song about the search for that 'spark,' an inspiration, which helps us shed the darkness and gather strength and courage to explore new possibilities in life. There is a whole other world out there."

The lyric, published with the official video, follows that line closely. It opens on acceptance, the admission that not everything is in our hands. Then comes movement: "I'm trying to cross the river / In a hope to find the ocean." The verses carry an apology as well as hope. The narrator never meant to hurt anyone, could never control the darkness, and wonders whether he "was broken long ago." The chorus is a request rather than a boast, asking someone to help him find "a new spark within me."

That is a gentler theme than the album's other previews. The band describes "Generation Coward" as "an unflinching reflection on fear, conformity, hypocrisy, and the silence that often surrounds human suffering." They say the title track is about "things falling apart, whether it's relationships, dreams, or just life in general." "A New Spark" is the album's turn towards recovery. It sits at track five, in the middle of a ten-track record.

How does A New Spark sound?

The band has told listeners what to expect from Disintegrate: "It's heavier, groovier and darker in places, with some alternative elements coming through, but it still feels like GATC." Early critics single out "A New Spark" as a song where that balance holds.

Rolling Stone India's weekly roundup of 25 September 2026 says the band "ramp up a more modern hard rock/metal turn on 'A New Spark.'" Brazil's Road to Metal, reviewing the album in advance on 14 September, calls it "perhaps one of the moments where the old and new identities of Girish And The Chronicles coexist most effectively." Critic Flavio Borges describes "distinctly traditional guitars and tones" in the opening, keyboards laying down a solid foundation, a bridge that gains momentum, and then "a more modern and aggressive chorus." He gives special credit to Yogesh Pradhan's bass for "supporting both the foundation and the melody." Diggins, in a 9/10 review of the full album, hears a song that "starts with a hypnotic guitar and just grows organically," with Suraz Sun's lead work showing "plenty of fire when required" while serving the song.

The credits show how much of the record the band made itself. Girish Pradhan composed the song and wrote the lyrics. He produced it with his brother Yogesh, who also mixed and mastered it. It was recorded at GATC studios, with drums tracked at Bread and Jaam studios. Prabal Deep Das directed the video, with lights and crew from Capture Crue in Bangalore. For a band on an international label, that is a strongly self-made way of working, and it makes the heavier turn read as the band's own choice rather than something imposed on them.

And there is still the voice. Rolling Stone India's June 2025 piece on the band's America's Got Talent audition credited Pradhan's "hair-raising vocal range" with millions of views online. Diggins makes the more useful point for a song like this one: for all that power, "He serves the song." On a lyric that asks for help rather than claiming victory, that restraint is exactly what the writing needs.

Why A New Spark matters for Indian rock

Girish And The Chronicles' official biography dates the band to October 2009 in Sikkim, with a later move to Bengaluru. In 2020 Pradhan told the Horns Up podcast, as Rolling Stone India reported, that moving away from Gangtok had widened the band's reach, and he advised other Northeast bands to "change base" for a while. The years since have proved him right. The band has supported Guns N' Roses in Abu Dhabi in 2023, toured Europe on the 2024 Re-Ignition Tour while "Kaal" came out, and won the judges' unanimous approval at their 2025 America's Got Talent audition with Adele's "Set Fire To The Rain," which Frontiers released as a single on 15 October 2025.

Disintegrate arrives with another homecoming of sorts. On the day "A New Spark" came out, the band announced it will support Guns N' Roses in Bengaluru on 14 November 2026, six days before the album. "Supporting GNR for the third time is a surreal feeling," the band said, "especially in a relatively hidden Himalayan state like Sikkim."

For listeners who know GATC mainly through "Ride to Hell" on Rock in India, the playlist we traced in our essay on the DIY roots of Rock in India, "A New Spark" is the best way into what comes next. It keeps the classic hard rock that we placed at the head of our guide to Indian metal bands on Rock in India. It also shows the band doing what we described in how independent bands build their sound: keeping the core and changing what surrounds it.

There is a fair caution. Road to Metal finds parts of Disintegrate "more debatable," with the closer "KAAL" using so many vocal effects that they partly hide Pradhan's power. Diggins notes that some fans "may initially miss a little of the immediacy" of the earlier records. Neither critic raises that worry about "A New Spark." On their account it is modern in its chorus and classic in its bones, which makes it the reassurance for anyone nervous about the change.

Should you press play?

Yes. If "Ride to Hell" is your GATC song, play "A New Spark" next, then "Generation Coward" to hear how far the band is prepared to push. If you are new to the band, start here. On the critics' account it is where the old and new GATC sit most comfortably together, built on a seven-year-old idea that needed a darker album to make sense.
