2008 was the year before Indian indie moved online for good. Bands still sold CDs at gigs and pressed albums for a few hundred fans, and a handful of those records are now on Apple Music India with their real 2008 dates. This page picks the best Indian indie songs of 2008 that you can still stream: Bengaluru rock, Malayalam rock, Mumbai metal and early Indian electronica.

How we checked. Every date below is the song's own release date on Apple Music India (iTunes catalogue, country IN), checked on 28 October 2026. Where Apple shows only a placeholder date of 1 January, we say so. We only list released music, and we leave out film soundtracks.

Avial: Avial (8 February 2008)

The self-titled debut from the Kerala band set Malayalam folk words to loud rock riffs, and it is still one of the most loved Indian indie records. All eight songs are dated 8 February 2008. The band's story is on our Avial band page and our Kerala indie scene guide.

1. "Nada Nada". The song most people know Avial by: a marching folk chant turned into a stadium rock chorus.

2. "Aadu Pambe". Built on a traditional Malayalam folk song, with a groove that never lets go.

3. "Chekele". Fast, funny and punchy.

4. "Karukara". Heavier, with a big chorus.

5. "Arikuruka". A slower song that shows the band's softer side.

6. "Njan Aara". A tight closer from the same session.

Thermal and a Quarter: This Is It (15 April 2008)

The Bengaluru band's fourth album, all ten songs dated 15 April 2008. TAAQ mix rock, funk and jazz with clever lyrics about city life. For the full story see Thermal and a Quarter songs and Thermal and a Quarter albums.

7. "This Is It". The title song: tight, funky and full of hooks.

8. "Holy Jose". A fan favourite with a sly lyric and a big guitar line.

9. "How Can I Get Your Groove". Funk-rock with a playful chorus.

10. "Between the Lines". A thoughtful mid-tempo song.

11. "Take Me to Your Dealer". A tongue-in-cheek rocker.

12. "Words and Pictures". One of the album's warmest melodies.

MyndSnare: Conditioned: Human (15 October 2008)

A progressive death metal album from Mumbai, all nine songs dated 15 October 2008. It is fast, complex and still respected by Indian metal fans. See also our Indian metal bands guide and best Indian metal albums.

13. "Conditioned: Human". The title song and the clearest entry point.

14. "Temporal Movements". A shifting, riff-packed opener.

15. "Layers of Hypocrisy". Brutal and precise.

16. "Changing Skins". One of the album's most memorable riffs.

Jalebee Cartel: early singles

Before their 2009 album Onepointnothing, the Mumbai electronic trio put out club singles.

17. "Angels Deserve To Die" (3 March 2008). A dark, driving dance track; Apple also lists several remixes.

18. "Single Tab" (17 June 2008). A tight club track from the Single Tab EP.

Junkyard Groove: 11:11

The Chennai band's debut 11:11 is on Apple Music India, but most of its songs carry a placeholder date of 1 January 2008. One song has a real date.

19. "Feel Like a Knife" (21 March 2008). Groovy, heavy and catchy. For the rest of the album see our Junkyard Groove songs guide.

  • Thermal and a Quarter, "Fly" and "Without You" (This Is It, 15 April 2008)

Why the 2008 list is short

Plenty of good Indian indie music came out in 2008, but much of it was never put on streaming services, or it sits on Apple with a wrong or placeholder date. We only list songs we could check. That is also why there is no albums list for 2008 yet: only three full-length Indian indie albums we could confirm have a real 2008 date on Apple Music India (Avial, This Is It and Conditioned: Human), which is too few for a fair list.
