2020 was the year live music stopped. Venues closed in March, festivals were cancelled, and Indian independent artists had to reach listeners through streaming alone. Yet the year still produced some excellent records: a veteran Bengaluru rock band's protest album, a Sikkim hard-rock band's loudest record, an Ahmedabad post-rock band's soft-focus album, a Kashmiri songwriter's home recordings and two landmark Mumbai and Pune rap albums. Here are the best Indian indie albums of 2020, plus the EPs that are worth your time.

How we checked. Every record here was checked on Apple Music India (iTunes catalogue, country IN) on 28 October 2026. Dates and track counts are the ones Apple shows, and we checked song-level dates to make sure each album is really a 2020 record. Some releases that Apple dates 2020 are actually reissues of older music (for example Prateek Kuhad's cold/mess package, whose songs are dated 2018), so we left them out. Only released music is included.

The albums

A World Gone Mad – Thermal and a Quarter (20 March 2020, 10 tracks). Released just days before India's national lockdown began, TAAQ's album sounded eerily on time. "Where Do We Gotta Go Now", "Believe It All", "Unbelong", "Leaders of Men" (first out in 2019), "N.F.A" and "World Gone Mad" mix sharp guitar rock with dry, political lyrics. "Stone Circle" features Swikrity Singh. Read the full catalogue in our Thermal and a Quarter albums guide. Start with: "World Gone Mad".

Mr. Nair – Raftaar (13 April 2020, Zee Music Company, 16 tracks). A long, personal rap album that collects singles "Main Wahi Hoon", "Dilli Waali Baatcheet", "Move" and "Damn" with new tracks like "Me and My Pen", "Sick", "Drama", "Bottal Wargi", "Superman" and "Proud". Raftaar is a mainstream star, but Mr. Nair is his most self-written, hip-hop-first record. Start with: "Me and My Pen".

Sleep – Aswekeepsearching (17 April 2020, 8 tracks). The Ahmedabad band's calm, beautiful album, built on slow guitars and soft vocals. Ajay Jayanthi features on "How Am I Supposed to Know", "Let Us Try" and "Sleep Again". It is a perfect late-night listen. More in our Aswekeepsearching band profile and Indian post-rock bands. Start with: "Glued".

Rock the Highway – Girish and the Chronicles (27 April 2020, 13 tracks). Big, classic hard rock with huge vocals from Girish Pradhan. "Rock the Highway", "Rock 'n' Roll Is Here to Stay", "The Sikkimese Dream (Rock 'n' Roll Wonderland)", "She's Heavy Metal" and "Identity Crisis" are made for loud speakers. Start with: "Rock the Highway".

Home Recordings (Vol. 1) – Ali Saffudin (20 July 2020, Azadi Records, 9 tracks). Simple, moving songs from the Kashmiri singer-songwriter, many in Kashmiri: "Gah Chon", "Kalaam e Aalam", "Roakh Posh", "Bisht Bisht", "Chaar Su", "Graduation Blues" and "The Spring Song". "Gah Chon" and "Roakh Posh" first came out in 2019. Start with: "Gah Chon".

Drive-In Cinema – Dhanji (17 August 2020, 7 tracks). Ahmedabad rapper Dhanji's sharp, funny rap record, with Rasla on most tracks. Titles like "Free Agent", "Drive-In Se Vastrapur", "Dikhti Maut", "Bawa Burday" and "Kalabaaj" sketch city life in detail. Start with: "Drive-In Se Vastrapur".

Punya Paap – DIVINE (3 December 2020, Mass Appeal India / Gully Gang, 11 tracks). DIVINE's second album is darker and more reflective than his debut. "Punya Paap" (September), "Mirchi" (October, with MC Altaf, Stylo G and Phenom) and "Mera Bhai" (November) came first, followed by "3:59 AM", "Walking Miracle", "Satya", "Disco Rap", "Shehnai" and "Drill Karte". See our DIVINE songs guide. Start with: "Mirchi".

Tadipaar – MC Stan (31 December 2020, 8 tracks). Released on the last day of the year, the Pune rapper's raw debut album became a cult record. "Hosh Mai Aa", "Ek Din Pyaar", "307", "Numberkari", "Amin" and the title track are loose, emotional and very catchy. Start with: "Ek Din Pyaar".

EPs worth hearing from 2020

Many artists also released strong singles this year that only later became albums. Dhruv Visvanath's "Dear Madeline" (17 April 2020) and When Chai Met Toast's "When We Feel Young" (2 August 2020) both ended up on 2021 albums, which you can read about in our best Indian indie albums of 2021.

Why 2020 still matters

With no gigs to play, artists put everything into recorded music. Rap grew fastest: DIVINE, MC Stan, Raftaar and Dhanji all made albums that fans still play. Guitar music answered with Thermal and a Quarter, Girish and the Chronicles and Aswekeepsearching.
