From a banker's leap and a borrowed band name to Kabir in Hindi rock, free downloads and four songs on Spotify's Rock in India: the Pune band that never changed its voice.
A banker who quit a day before his contract was confirmed, a Pune guitarist who borrowed his old band's name, and a Hindi rock sound that has outlasted every format it was released on: that is the Agnee band history in one line.
The Agnee band is a Pune rock group built around vocalist Mohan Kannan and guitarist-producer Kaustubh "Koco" Dhavale. Their self-titled debut came out on Sony BMG in 2007; within two years they had handed back the advance for a second album so they could give their songs away online. Nearly two decades later, four Agnee tracks sit on Spotify's Rock in India playlist, led by the 2007 ballad "Shaam Tanha" at number nine in our 13 October 2026 snapshot. Few Indian rock bands have stayed this melodic, this Hindi and this stubbornly themselves for this long.

How did the Agnee band begin?
In May 2005, a day before Deutsche Bank India was to confirm him for a contract-bound term, Mohan Kannan quit his job as an assistant vice-president to make music. The Indian Express, telling that story, added that exactly two years later to the date, he and Koco launched their first album as Agnee.
Mohan was not a conventional rock singer. He grew up in Kolkata, the son of Carnatic musicians, spent about fourteen years on mridangam lessons, and preferred jazz and instrumentals to Western vocals. Koco, Pune-born, was the rocker, citing guitarist-composers David Gilmour and Mark Knopfler. The two met while jamming for common musician friends.
Mohan told Radioandmusic.com that once demos of "Sadho Re" and "Ujale Baaz" were done, labels said yes quickly, and Sony BMG had a contract ready before the band had a name. They took the name of Agni, Koco's earlier band, and changed the spelling because the music was different. The debut nearly stalled anyway. Koco recalled the label chief's verdict on the first version: "He said it does sound like Shakti, but where is the song?" The band cut the record from 48 minutes to 32. The finished album, recorded largely at Sound Ideaz in Pune, runs eight songs.
What does Agnee sound like?
Rolling Stone India's 2011 profile described the blend plainly: Koco's classic rock, pop and Indian influences meeting Mohan's Carnatic and Hindustani grounding, moving between folk-rock, pop-rock, funk and jazz. "Sadho Re" and "Kabira" set the words of the poet-saint Kabir to rock arrangements. "Shaam Tanha" and "Keh Lene Do" are the soft side: unhurried ballads that let Mohan's voice carry the song.
Singing in Hindi was a choice. Some friends felt they were "selling out" by avoiding English, Koco told the Hindustan Times in 2009. His answer still reads like a mission statement: "I look at Hindi music in the world music context. It somehow seems right when an Indian is performing on the world stage in an Indian language."
Why did Agnee walk away from Sony?
By September 2009, the Hindustan Times reported, Agnee had broken its two-album deal with Sony Music and returned the advance for the second record so they could release new songs free on their website. "We are never going to charge people for our music," Mohan said. The MTV Splitsvilla theme had already gone out that way, free on agneelive.com on Valentine's Day 2009, followed by a public contest to put words to the tune. "Aahatein", their Splitsvilla theme song, became one of their best-loved tracks.
That listener-first instinct later became "Create with Agnee" with Radio Mirchi, and it places the band in the free-download lineage traced in our feature on the DIY roots of Rock in India. They are also precise about the label "independent". "India is the only country where we refer to non-film music as 'independent' music," they told The Indian Express in 2022. "Everywhere else, independent music refers to music that is non-label backed."
From The Avengers to The Dewarists
In January 2012 the Hindustan Times reported that Disney had chosen Agnee, from a shortlist that included Euphoria, Strings and Jal, to make the Hindi theme for The Avengers, with lyrics to be written by Abbas Tyrewala. That song, "Hello Andheron", featured Aditi Singh Sharma, and it was one of three Agnee songs nominated at that year's GiMA awards, with "Manmaani", their MTV Roadies theme, and "I Believe".
"I Believe" came from the first season of The Dewarists in 2011, filmed in Pune, where Agnee, Parikrama and Shilpa Rao recorded it at Shisha Café. Mohan told The Hindu that Koco "has been jamming to the song I Believe for a long time. It was written by someone who was going through heartbreak." When Koco and Parikrama's late guitarist Sonam Sherpa got together, he said, "the result was quite awesome." The track became a streaming single in 2019 under Parikrama's name, featuring Agnee and Shilpa Rao. Indian Ocean appeared in the same Dewarists season.
Film work ran alongside, though the band never chased it: songs for Dil Dosti Etc, the Aalaap soundtrack, the Marathi film Shala and Yeh Hai Bakrapur. Mohan also became a sought-after playback voice, from "Naav" (Udaan) and "Kinare" (Queen) to "Kahani" for Laal Singh Chaddha in 2022. "I can't imagine being without Agnee ever," he told Indulge Express in 2020.
Who are the Agnee band members?
The core has always been Mohan Kannan and Koco, who write the songs together. The Hindustan Times in 2018 and The Indian Express in 2022 named the rest of the current lineup as drummer Hrishikesh "Hrishi" Datar and bassist Chirayu Vedekar; the same four were on stage in Lucknow in December 2024. Announcements for "Maahi Ve" (2021) and "Kya Mai Kya Tu" (2022) also named Varun on percussion.
Earlier lineups included bassist Among Jamir and keyboardist Aditya Pushkarna, according to The Indian Express; the debut album's credits, as listed on Wikipedia, include Arijit Datta on bass and vocals.
Agnee songs on Spotify's Rock in India
Agnee's four places on Rock in India span the whole career. "Shaam Tanha" (4:59), from the 2007 debut, ranks highest at number nine. "I Believe" keeps the Dewarists moment alive.
The two newest show Agnee working with Hindi cinema's finest lyricists on its own terms. "Mallaah" (July 2023), written with Amitabh Bhattacharya, launched Merchant Records' SoundChk series. Koco told News India Times it began as a romantic ballad with the placeholder word "Saiyyaan" until Bhattacharya "took the song in a completely different direction with Mallaah and it turned into a philosophical one." Bhattacharya had also written "Kya Mai Kya Tu", the self-released single for the band's 15th anniversary on 15 May 2022. "Le Chal Saaware" (July 2024), also on Merchant Records, reunited them with Abbas Tyrewala twelve years after "Hello Andheron".
New listeners should start with "Shaam Tanha", then "Sadho Re", "Aahatein" and "Mallaah". For more Hindi-language rock, try our profile of The Local Train; our guide to regional rock bands in India goes beyond Hindi.
Why does Agnee still matter?
Because they kept showing up on stage. In 2015 almost 2,400 fans packed Blue Frog Pune and jammed the traffic outside, Rolling Stone India reported; the next year the venue moved them to a 3,000-capacity amphitheatre. "The crowd will murder us if we don't play our older stuff," Koco joked. In December 2024 they were billed with Parikrama at GIFLIF Indiestaan in Gurugram, and closed Lucknow's four-day Repertwahr Festival with a set that ran from "Hello Andheron" through "Mallaah" and "Shaam Tanha" to the Roadies theme.
The lesson of Agnee is not that a band must stay small to stay independent. It is that a band can sign to a major, walk away, work with film's biggest names and still sound like itself. Mohan once said there is "always a composer's touch" in the way he sings. Nearly twenty years on, you can still hear it.
