Indian folk fusion takes songs and poetry that predate recorded music, such as Kabir's dohas, Kannada folk tunes and Manganiyar ballads from the Thar desert, and plays them with drum kits, electric guitars and festival sound systems. It is one of the oldest and most loved strands of Indian independent music, and it is still reaching big stages: two of the acts below are on the Lollapalooza India 2027 lineup announced in September 2026.

This guide covers six essential acts, with a starting point for each. Every fact comes from the sources listed at the end.

What is folk fusion?

Tradition first

Folk fusion starts from traditional material: folk melodies, devotional poetry, regional languages, or hereditary performers. It then arranges that material with rock, blues, reggae or jazz instruments. The Western side is the frame. The song comes from the tradition.

Not the same as indie folk

Indian "indie folk" usually means original acoustic singer-songwriter music in a Western style. Folk fusion is about Indian traditional music. Some bands do both, but the starting points are different.

1. Indian Ocean

Indian Ocean formed in New Delhi in 1990 and is widely recognised as a pioneer of fusion rock in India. Its experimental sound combines ragas and sometimes Indian folk songs with rock guitars and drums. Critics have described it as "Indo-rock fusion with jazz-spiced rhythms that integrates shlokas, sufism, environmentalism, mythology and revolution". Founders Susmit Sen and Asheem Chakravarty shaped the early band. Chakravarty died in 2009, and Sen left in 2013, which leaves Rahul Ram as the only member from the debut album. In 2014 Rolling Stone India included "Ma Rewa" and "Kandisa", both from Kandisa (2000), in its 25 greatest Indian rock songs of the previous 25 years. Since 2010 the band has released music on its own terms, putting 16/330 Khajoor Road online for free. Indian Ocean plays day one of Lollapalooza India 2027.

Start with: "Kandisa" and "Ma Rewa". Read our Indian Ocean profile for more.

2. Raghu Dixit Project

The Raghu Dixit Project is a multilingual folk-rock and world-music band that Raghu Dixit formed in Bengaluru. Dixit's music combines Indian folk styles with styles from around the world, and songs such as "Lokada Kalaji", "Gudugudiya" and "Ninna Poojege Bande Mahadeshwara" are sung largely in Kannada. His self-titled debut album was the first release on Vishal–Shekhar's independent label. In 2010 it was also released on the world-music label Wrasse Records, and it reached No. 1 on the UK iTunes World Music chart. The second album, Jag Changa (2013), has eight tracks in Kannada, Hindi and Tamil. "My music is unique and probably the USP is that it's sung in a vernacular tongue," Dixit told The Hindu.

Start with: "Lokada Kalaji". See our Raghu Dixit Project profile.

3. Swarathma

Swarathma formed in Mysore in 2002 and is based in Bengaluru. The band blends Indian folk and classical music with blues rock and reggae, and its lyrics range from personal journeys to social and political themes. It got its first break in 2006 by winning Radio City Live with a Kannada song, "Ee Bhoomi". It has released three albums: Swarathma (2009), Topiwalleh (2012) and Raah-e-Fakira (2018). The band swept the 2009 Jack Daniels Indian Rock Awards, winning Band, Song and Album of the Year, and has toured Morocco, the UK, Hong Kong, Australia and Singapore.

Start with: Topiwalleh. Read our Swarathma profile.

4. Kabir Café

Kabir Café is a Mumbai band that came together in 2013. Founder Neeraj Arya, influenced by his guru Prahlad Singh Tipaniya, sets the dohas and sakhis of the 15th-century saint Kabir to folk melodies. He met Carnatic violinist Mukund Ramaswamy while playing on the streets of Mumbai in 2012, and the duo grew into a band. Members call Kabir their "first member". The band has released Panchrang (2016), Kabir Café Live (2018) and Sabr, and has played more than 800 concerts. Its songs have been used in the film Hindi Medium and the series Scam 1992.

Start with: "Fakiri" ("Mann Lagyo Mero Yaar Fakiri Mein") from Panchrang.

5. Mame Khan

Mame Khan comes from Satto, a village near Jaisalmer, and belongs to Rajasthan's Manganiyar community of hereditary musicians. His father, Ustad Rana Khan, was also a folk singer. Khan reached a national audience on Coke Studio @ MTV in 2012 with "Chaudhary", sung with Amit Trivedi. He has sung for films including Luck By Chance, Mirzya and Sonchiriya. His debut album Mame Khan's Desert Sessions (2015) was crowdfunded. In 2022 he became the first folk artist to walk the Cannes Film Festival red carpet, and his folk, Sufi and fusion album Desert Rose came out on 13 October 2022.

Start with: "Chaudhary" on Coke Studio, then Desert Rose.

6. The Manganiyar Seduction

The Manganiyar Seduction is director Roysten Abel's stage production featuring more than 40 Manganiyar musicians from Rajasthan. Its set design was inspired partly by Jaipur's Hawa Mahal: the musicians sit in a grid of lit, curtained boxes, which you can see in this article's cover photo from the 2011 Melbourne Festival. The production opened in New Delhi in 2006 and has since travelled to the UK, US, Germany, Austria and Australia. It is folk fusion as theatre: the music stays traditional, and the staging makes it a spectacle. The production is on day two of Lollapalooza India 2027.

Start with: a full live performance, since the show is designed as a single build.

A listening path

  1. Mame Khan for the tradition at its source.
  2. The Manganiyar Seduction for that same tradition staged as a spectacle.
  3. Kabir Café for devotional poetry with a folk-rock band.
  4. Indian Ocean for the band that started fusion rock.
  5. Swarathma and Raghu Dixit Project for South Indian, multilingual folk rock.
