Indian Ocean is the Delhi band that's often credited with starting Indian independent rock. They formed in 1990 and built a sound out of folk melody, Hindustani raga, jazz-rock improvisation and long jams. Their songs are usually sung in Hindi or taken from folk and devotional texts. Over three decades their line-up has changed, but they've kept making albums at their own pace, and in between they wrote some of the best-known indie-adjacent film music in Hindi cinema.
This guide covers their studio and live albums in order, followed by the soundtracks. Every date, track count, tracklist and ℗ line below comes from Apple Music India, checked on 28 October 2026. For the band's profile, see the Indian Ocean artist page.

Apple dates are sometimes digital re-listing dates rather than first release dates. The ℗ year in brackets gives the original year where Apple shows a different one. The band's self-titled 1993 debut isn't on Apple Music India, so we've left it out of the table.
Desert Rain (1997)
Desert Rain is a live record and the earliest Indian Ocean album on Apple. The seven tracks are mostly instrumental and mostly long:
"Desert Rain", "Euphoria", "Going To ITO", "Village Damsel", "From The Ruins", "Boll Weevil" and "Melancholic Ecstasy", all recorded live.
Listen to this for the band's improvising side, with long guitar-and-bass dialogues and tabla-driven grooves. It's a good counterweight to the more song-based records that came later.
Kandisa (2000)
Kandisa is the album most people mean when they talk about Indian Ocean. It came out on Times Music with seven tracks:
"Kya Maloom", "Ma Rewa", "Leaving Home", "Hille Re", "Khajuraho", "Kaun" and "Kandisa".
The title track is built on an Aramaic church chant, and "Ma Rewa" comes from a Narmada folk song. "Kandisa" and "Ma Rewa" have stayed staples of their live sets. Apple India also has a 2013 Times Music re-listing with the same seven tracks, plus a six-track Best Of Indian Ocean (2011) drawn from this period. It's the best place to start.
Jhini (2003)
Jhini came out on Kosmic Music, Chennai, with seven tracks:
"Bhor", "Torrent", "Jhini", "Nam Myo Ho", "Let Me Speak", "Des Mera" and "After The War".
It's darker and more politically direct than Kandisa. "Des Mera" and "After The War" are the songs to hear. The title track comes from Kabir's jhini jhini bini chadariya, and the band would keep returning to devotional poetry.
Black Friday (2004–2005)
Anurag Kashyap's Black Friday gave Indian Ocean their first full film score. Apple India lists it twice: a nine-track Times Music release (3 May 2005, ℗ 2004) and a nine-track "Original Motion Picture Soundtrack" re-listing (2013). "Bandeh", sung by Rahul Ram, is the song from it that crossed over furthest. Apple shows two new remix singles of "Bandeh" from Times Music in August and September 2026.
16/330 Khajoor Road (2009–2010)
Named after the address of the band's rehearsal space in Delhi's Karol Bagh, 16/330 Khajoor Road has seven tracks (Apple date 25 July 2010, ℗ 2009, self-released):
"Chand", "Shoonya", "Bondhu", "Sone Ki Nagri" (feat. Nathulal Solanki, Chugge Khan & Asin Khan), "Bula Raha", "Darte Ho" and "Jogiya".
This was the last album to feature founding vocalist and percussionist Asheem Chakravarty, who died in 2009. "Bondhu" and "Sone Ki Nagri", with Rajasthani folk musicians, are the highlights. It's the most direct and emotional of their studio albums.
Tandanu (2014)
Tandanu is a collaboration album. Each of its seven tracks pairs the band with a guest from Indian classical, film or fusion music:
"Tandanu" (feat. Shankar Mahadevan), "Gar Ho Sake" (feat. Shubha Mudgal), "Behney Do" (feat. Karsh Kale), "Longing" (feat. Kumaresh Rajagopalan), "Roday" (feat. Vishal Dadlani), "Chitu" (feat. V Selvaganesh) and "Charkha" (feat. Pandit Vishwa Mohan Bhatt).
Apple files it under Alternative Folk. Shubha Mudgal's "Gar Ho Sake" and the title track with Shankar Mahadevan are the obvious entry points.
The film years (2010–2022)
Between studio albums, the band kept scoring films and series. On Apple India these include Peepli Live (EP, 2010), Satyagraha (2013), Masaan (2015, three tracks), Kanpuriye (EP, 2020), Jugaadistan (14-track series soundtrack, 2022) and Chakki (EP, 2022). Masaan and Peepli Live are the essential ones. Both show how well their folk-rock writing fits on screen.
Tu Hai (2023)
Tu Hai is their most recent studio album, self-released on 5 May 2023, with six tracks:
"Jaadu Maaya", "Jungle" (feat. George Brooks), "Iss Tan Dhan" (feat. Vikku Vinayakram), "Tu Hai, Pt. 01", "Tu Hai, Pt. 02" and "Rebirth".
The first three came out as weekly singles through April 2023. It's a reflective, mostly unhurried record, with saxophonist George Brooks and ghatam master Vikku Vinayakram as guests. "Rebirth" closes it on a hopeful note.
Since Tu Hai (2023–2026)
Apple India lists only singles and soundtrack work since: "Baagh Aayore" (December 2023), the Bindiya Ke Bahubali soundtrack EP (2025), the "Real Kashmir Football Club Anthem" (December 2025), and the self-released "Bol Ari" (17 September 2026) and "Vaishnav Jan" (2 October 2026). There's no new full album yet. We'll add one here when it's out.
