Pick of the week: Indrani, Even If You Beat Me

Indrani steps out from her Delhi band Ladyship with six songs that are sharply specific. "Money" calls out a money-minded partner, and "Not Today" brushes off a breakup conversation with an irreverent chorus: "Make my living room a bar." Wild City puts it best: the diary-style writing turns into clever songwriting when those pointed verses build to a pop hook. It's the strongest debut of the week.

Also worth a listen

  • Mannan Shaah with Javed Akhtar and Anuradha Juju, "Mohabbat Ki Zabaan Hai Khamoshi"
  • Shwetang Shankar, Numaayaan EP
  • Brijesh Sarin, End of Teenage
  • Guru Randhawa feat. Kiran Bajwa, "So What" (Saregama, out Tuesday 27 Oct). A label release, listed here for the Punjabi search crowd.

How we choose

We pick releases from Indian and diaspora artists released in the past seven days. Major-label and independent releases get equal consideration, and nobody pays to be included. Artists can submit through our submission guide.
