The story of Indian progressive metal starts in a hostel room in Manipal. Keshav Dhar was studying biomedical engineering, nobody in town wanted to play his kind of music, so he wrote it on a computer: riffs pasted together, then learned back on the guitar. He told Rolling Stone India it was "a very unmetal thing to do." It also got him a MySpace message from TesseracT's Daniel Tompkins and an email from ex-Megadeth guitarist Marty Friedman.
That project became Skyharbor, and Skyharbor became proof that an Indian band could make technical, atmospheric metal the rest of the world would queue for. These are the bands that built the scene around it. For the wider genre, start with our Indian metal bands guide.

Skyharbor
The flagship. Debut Blinding White Noise: Illusion and Chaos (2012) split itself in two — Tompkins' clean melodies on the first disc, Bhayanak Maut's Sunneith Revankar roaring through the second. The band played its first-ever show at NH7 Weekender in Pune, then went on to Graspop in Belgium in 2014 (that is them on our cover). Guiding Lights (2014) brought Periphery's Mark Holcomb and Plini as guests; Sunshine Dust (2018), with American singer Eric Emery, went heavier. Start with "Allure". Full story on our Skyharbor page.
Amogh Symphony
Guitarist Vishal J Singh, who also guested on Skyharbor's debut, runs the most out-there project in Indian metal. Vectorscan (2014) is thirteen tracks of experimental prog and jazz-fusion, some of it titled in Assamese. Nobody else sounds like this. It sits on our best Indian metal albums list.
What Escapes Me
Kolkata, active since 2009. Djent grooves and metalcore punch, with arrangement choices nobody else in the scene would risk — including sarangi on Egress Point. FFO: TesseracT, Dream Theater.
Yonsample
Also Kolkata, formed in 2008 as Moshpit. Djent rhythm work, ambient keys, harsh-and-clean vocal trade-offs. Extropy is the album that defined their local modern-metal identity. FFO: Periphery, Skyharbor.
Zygnema
Mumbai's long-running heavy band leans groove, but What Makes Us Human Is Obsolete (2015) is full of the odd-time, layered writing prog fans want. Eleven tracks, self-released. See our Zygnema songs.
Project Mishram
The band Indian metalheads recommend when someone asks for "Skyharbor, but more Indian". A seven-piece from Bengaluru built around flute, violin, mridangam and konnakol as much as guitars, pulling Carnatic ragas into djent and prog. Debut Meso (2021, six tracks, self-released on Mishram Records) runs from the nadaswaram-laced "Loco Coko" to the veena-and-gutturals "Kanakana"; the band has since played UK Tech Fest, ArcTanGent (2023) and Louder Than Life (2024). Start with "Sakura". Bandcamp · Spotify
Limit Zero
A Bengaluru progressive outfit fronted by Sunneith Revankar, ex-Bhayanak Maut, the same voice that roars through Blinding White Noise. Debut Gravestone Constellations (2012) is nine tracks of space-themed prog, with Siddharth Basrur guesting on "Pulsar". Start with "Galaxies Bleed". Bandcamp
Eccentric Pendulum
Bengaluru technical prog-death that, in the early 2010s, was among the most talked-about live bands in the south. Debut Winding the Optics (independent, 2010; CD reissue 2011) was recorded in Bangalore and mixed in Germany by Daniel Bernath. Activity has been sparse since; the record still holds up. Bandcamp
The Minerva Conduct
India/US instrumental atmospheric prog — big, cinematic, wordless. The self-titled debut (2017) has eight tracks; start with "Exultant". Bandcamp. A favourite on r/IndianMetalheads threads whenever someone asks for "bands like Skyharbor".
Anup Sastry
The American drummer who first reached Keshav Dhar through drum covers of Skyharbor songs, then became the band's live drummer from 2011 to 2015 and toured with them again in 2019. His solo work is essential for anyone in it for the rhythm section.
Where the scene goes next
Indian prog never needed a label system to work — it was born on laptops and forums, and it still lives there. Bandcamp, YouTube playthroughs and Bangalore Open Air–style festivals are the infrastructure. If you are in a band, our guide to submitting metal music is the next step.
