Most coverage of Indian independent music is about the people on stage. This guide is about the people who shape how a record sounds: band members who produce, producer-artists with their own catalogues, and the producer duos who move between indie and film. It deliberately doesn't cover beatmakers for rappers or club producers. For those, we already have Indian hip-hop producers and Indian electronic music producers. This page covers the record-making side of indie pop, rock and songwriting.

The rule: we name a producer only where the credit appears on public release metadata (Apple Music India, checked 28 October 2026), on the artist's official site, or on our own live artist pages. If we couldn't confirm a production credit, we leave it out rather than guess.

What an indie producer actually does in India

In a major-label setup, a producer is usually hired by the label. In Indian indie, the producer is often one of three people:

  1. A band member. One person in the group handles arrangement, recording and mix decisions.
  2. A producer-artist. Someone with their own releases who also shapes other people's records.
  3. A producer team on the film-indie border. Duos who write and produce for soundtracks but draw on indie songwriters.

Knowing which of these sits behind a record tells you a lot about how it sounds. Our how independent bands build their sound piece goes deeper.

Producers inside the band

Gunjan Soral (The Lost Symbols). The Jaipur band's official site credits Soral with lead guitar and production, and also credits him as music producer on songs the band made with Kumar Sanu and Suraj Jagan. Four self-released albums in four years (2021–2024) is a production achievement as much as a songwriting one. See The Lost Symbols songs: FAROGH and Taysa and the artist page.

Palee Francis (When Chai Met Toast). Our When Chai Met Toast artist page lists him on keyboards and production in the Kochi band, alongside Ashwin Gopakumar (vocals), Achyuth Jaigopal (guitar and banjo) and Pai Sailesh (drums and percussion). The band's warm, polished pop sound is made inside the group, from the four-track Believe EP (2018) to the album When We Feel Young (2021) and the Nature Tapes, Vol. 1 EP (2024). See When Chai Met Toast members.

Karan Katiyar (Bloodywood). Katiyar started Bloodywood in New Delhi in 2016, posting metal versions of pop songs to YouTube before forming a two-piece with vocalist Jayant Bhadula. The project's identity, from the cover videos to the debut album Rakshak (18 February 2022), grew out of that two-piece. See the Bloodywood artist page.

Producer-artists

Sandunes (Sanaya Ardeshir). A Mumbai producer-artist whose own catalogue is the best proof of her hands-on approach. Apple lists the EP Unfinish (December 2015), the album Downstream (September 2016), the EPs NOLA Daydream (2018), 11:11 (2019) and Nowhere to Stand (2021), a full collaboration with UK drummer Richard Spaven, Spaven x Sandunes (2020), and the album The Ground Beneath Her Feet (November 2023).

Dualist Inquiry (Sahej Bakshi). An electronic project with a guitarist's ear. The catalogue runs from the Dualism EP (2011) through the albums Doppelganger (2013) and Dreamcatcher (2016), the EPs Natural Disasters (2014) and Life Forms (2019), to When We Get There (February 2024).

Komorebi (Tarana Marwah). Komorebi is the recording name of Tarana Marwah, an electronic-pop artist and producer. Her four-track Birds and Bees EP came out in May 2022.

Dhruv Visvanath. Best known as a percussive acoustic guitarist, Visvanath is also described as a producer, and his catalogue increasingly includes soundtrack work. Apple lists him on the 2024 soundtracks for Por (Tamil) and Dange (Hindi), and on the Friday Night Plan soundtrack (2023) alongside When Chai Met Toast.

Producer duos between indie and film

OAFF and Savera. This pair are the clearest example of indie-minded producers working in Hindi film. Apple credits them across the Gehraiyaan soundtrack (2022), including "Doobey" and "Beqaaboo", and on Kho Gaye Hum Kahan (2023), including "Hone Do Jo Hota Hai" and "Teri Yeh Baatein", the latter with Ankur Tewari. Tewari also appears on the Gehraiyaan title track remix.

Gaurav Raina (Midival Punditz). Raina co-founded the Delhi electronica act Midival Punditz with Tapan Raj; they were the first Indian electronica act signed to an international label, Six Degrees Records in the US. Apple credits Midival Punditz on the Gully Boy soundtrack (2019) and lists their own albums from MIDIval PunditZ (2002) to Love And Machines (April 2026). Raina also shares the credit with Ankur Tewari and Komorebi on the single "Ishaarey" (August 2023): a good example of the small set of collaborators who keep turning up in Mumbai indie credits.

How to read production credits

  • Apple Music and Spotify credits now often list producer, mixing engineer and mastering engineer. Check the song credits panel, not just the artist line.
  • Bandcamp pages often carry full liner notes.
  • Official band sites sometimes list roles that streaming credits leave out, as with The Lost Symbols.
  • ℗ lines show who owns the recording, not who produced it. Our who owns Indian indie music masters explains the difference.

For musicians: working with a producer
