The Indian female indie artists worth knowing in 2026 include Mali, Sanjeeta Bhattacharya, Aditi Ramesh, Monica Dogra, Reble, Meba Ofilia, Sarah Black, Anumita Nadesan, Nida Siddiqui, Anika Bharwani, Karshni, Anjali Manoharan and Damini Bhatla. They work across singer-songwriter pop, jazz-leaning R&B, Carnatic-rooted soul, electronic rock, Khasi and Jaintia hip-hop, Tamil pop and Telugu songwriting. What connects them is that their own songs, not film soundtracks, are the centre of their careers. Some, like Mali, have won major awards; others released debut albums only in 2025 and 2026.
This guide profiles each artist with sourced facts: where they come from, what they sound like and which release to start with. It also explains how to tell an independent artist from a film-first one, because that line is blurrier for women singers in India than the playlists suggest.
Who counts as an Indian female indie artist?
There is no official definition. In this guide an indie artist is someone whose main work is original, non-film music that they write or co-write and release themselves or through a small label. Many of the women below also sing for films, and some later signed to larger companies. Music Ally made the same point in June 2026 when it looked at YouTube Music's Foundry Class of 2026: of the four Indian acts chosen, it said only Telugu singer-songwriter Damini Bhatla still released her non-film music through an independent label.
That is why the list mixes established names with newer ones. Being an established name in Indian indie music does not always mean being independent today. Where an artist is known to work with a major label, we say so.
The established voices
1. Mali
Mali is the stage name of Maalavika Manoj, a Chennai-born singer-songwriter based in Mumbai. She was named in Forbes India's 30 Under 30 list in 2021, played the first Lollapalooza India in 2023 and won the MTV Europe Music Award for Best Indian Act in 2024.
