Who is on stage
When Chai Met Toast are a four-piece:
- Ashwin Gopakumar, vocals and guitar
- Achyuth Jaigopal, guitar and banjo
- Pai Sailesh, drums
- Palee Francis, keys and production
Kishan John is the band's longtime manager. Jaigopal graduated with an MBA from Cambridge Judge Business School this June. He did his undergraduate studies at Berklee College of Music in Boston. Before When Chai Met Toast grew, he toured with folk-fusion artist Raghu Dixit, whose band we profiled in our piece on the Raghu Dixit Project. Jaigopal told Rolling Stone India he still helps with tour logistics, day-to-day marketing and social media.
What the Joy Rooms shows include
Gopakumar explained the tour name to Rolling Stone India: "The entire idea of Joy Rooms is to basically take our front yard of the home, so that it almost feels like we're playing in front of them and make them feel at home."
A few details stand out from the interview:
- A chai break in the middle of the set. The band has partnered with boutique chai brands to serve tea to the audience.
- A costume change into shirts made by recycling the band members' mothers' saris.
- The whole new album played live. Pai Sailesh called the tour "a mega-refresh" aesthetically and sonically.
- Released singles "Dreamland", "Baaton" and "I'm Coming Home" sit alongside unreleased songs such as "Far From Bombay". Jaigopal hinted it could be the next single.
Jaigopal was frank about the scale: "It's not like we are playing stadiums or arenas yet. But it's still like a very DIY tour, with the grunt work of loading in equipment every day."
Bigger rooms and a spotlight on Indian indie artists
This run put the band in bigger rooms than before. They sold out the 650-capacity Great American Music Hall in San Francisco and played to nearly 900 people at the Opera House in Toronto, according to Rolling Stone India.
The band also used the European leg to spotlight other Indian independent musicians. The singer-songwriters named were Jeremiah De Rozario, promoting his new EP The Heart Showcase, plus Tanmaya Bhatnagar, Teenasai and Sidharth Nair.
Gopakumar said the band now probably plays more shows outside India than inside it, and put that down to choosing quality over quantity. "I think doing less number of shows in a year has made us look forward to the shows we have, even more," he said.
The album behind the tour
Small Town, Big Love, Little Homes is the band's second full-length album, after When We Feel Young in 2021. The singles came out one by one:
Dreamland
"Dreamland" features singer and composer Job Kurian. Its music video, directed by Anto Philip, dropped on 20 August 2025. The Hindu described the song as an ode to Kerala that includes the sounds of the kombu, elathalam and chenda, instruments traditionally used in Kerala's melams. The New Indian Express reported that the album was announced as nine tracks, with the rest of the songs set for release month by month.
Baaton and I'm Coming Home
The band announced "Baaton" as out now on their Substack newsletter, The Toast Post, on 8 October 2025. "I'm Coming Home" came out as a single in 2025. Its Spotify listing credits the release as being under exclusive license to Universal Music India, while the 2021 album When We Feel Young lists the band itself as the rights holder. That fits a wider pattern in Indian independent music, where acts who start out self-releasing license later work to a label. We looked at what those deals mean for artists in our guide to who owns Indian indie music masters.
When is the India tour?
There is no official India itinerary yet. Rolling Stone India reports the band plans an India tour after the world tour wraps in Dubai on 14 November 2026, and that a recent band update hinted at Mumbai and New Delhi shows. In a comment, the band said: "When we do India, we want to do it the best way we can, and it'll happen we promise."
That would follow an earlier plan. In August 2025, The New Indian Express reported a six-city India tour planned for December and January alongside the 2026 world tour. For other Indian dates this winter, our Indian music festivals 2026 calendar lists the major events by month.
