Spotify playlist pitching in India runs through exactly one form, and a lot of the advice sold around it is wrong or overpriced. I read four of Spotify's Indian editorial playlists almost every hour for this publication. At 1:33 AM IST on 17 October 2026, RADAR India held 75 songs, Indie India 75, Fresh Finds India 50 and Rock in India 100. None of those 300 slots can be bought, and none can be arranged by emailing someone who knows someone. Editors fill them, and the only official way to put a new song in front of those editors is the pitch tool inside Spotify for Artists.
This guide is for an independent artist in India with a single on the way and no label marketing team. It covers what the tool asks, which shelf you are realistically aiming at, what your distributor has to get right, and why the paid shortcuts mostly don't apply to you. Where something is Spotify's rule, I cite Spotify. Where it is my opinion, I say so.
Spotify playlist pitching in India at a glance
- Where: Spotify for Artists, then Music, then Upcoming; one unreleased song at a time (Spotify support)
- When: the music must be delivered and pitched at least 7 days before release; Believe advises two to three weeks
- Free bonus: a song pitched at least 7 days ahead is added to your followers' Release Radar playlists (Spotify support)
- Not pitchable: compilations, songs on which you are only a featured artist, and anything already live
- Cost: nothing. Spotify says services selling guaranteed playlist placement break its terms
- Paid tools: India was not listed for Discovery Mode, Marquee or Showcase on Spotify's support pages when we checked on 17 October 2026
- Indian independent shelves this guide refers to: RADAR India, Indie India, Fresh Finds India, Rock in India
There is one door, and it shuts on release day
Spotify's support page is plain about the mechanics. You log in at artists.spotify.com, go to Music and then Upcoming, choose a song and fill in the form. You can pitch one song at a time, and once it goes live you can pitch the next. You can edit the pitch up to release day, though Spotify warns there is no guarantee editors will see the changes. Once the song is out, it is "no longer eligible for pitching".
The seven-day rule is the one I see people get wrong. It is not seven days from the moment you upload to your distributor. The song has to have reached Spotify and be showing in your Upcoming tab, and Spotify asks you to deliver at least seven days before release "so our editors have time to listen". Distributors need their own processing time on top of that, which is why the distributor Believe tells artists to get music in "ideally 2 to 3 weeks in advance". My own habit is four weeks between a finished master and the release date.
Even a pitch that goes nowhere earns you something. Spotify says a song pitched at least seven days before release goes onto your followers' Release Radar playlists. It is free, and it is the one part of the process Spotify promises.
What the pitch form asks, and how I'd answer it
Spotify's playlisting page lists the building blocks: pick one song from the release, give your hometown and where you are based now, choose up to three genres, and tell your story. When the tool launched in 2018, the Spotify for Artists blog walked through the tags with senior product manager Steve Shirley: a main genre with subgenres, up to three music cultures, up to two moods, up to two song styles, the instruments that feature, and questions on whether the track is a cover, a remix or an instrumental, and whether it was recorded in a studio or live. The layout has shifted since. Believe's help page says the written description is capped at 500 characters.
For Indian artists, two parts of that form matter more than the rest. The first is culture and location. Shirley said music culture "encompasses both the language and cultural influence of the music, as well as the location of the artist making it", because Spotify has editors programming for particular markets. If your song is in Kannada or Khasi, say so in the tags and again in the text. When this desk counted languages on 16 October, every Fresh Finds India song we could match on JioSaavn was tagged Hindi or English, as we reported in our look at Indian indie languages. A regional-language song may well belong on a language or regional playlist instead, and honest tags are how the right editor finds it.
The second is those 500 characters. Please don't paste your press release. Spotify's playlisting page admits "we get thousands of pitches a week", so write what an editor can't hear in the audio: who made the song, where, why it exists, and what you are doing around the release. A Pune gig the week it comes out, a video, a radio session. One clear sentence on the sound helps. Words like "soulful" and "haunting" cost characters and tell nobody anything.
Which Indian playlist are you actually pitching for?
You don't pick a playlist in the form. It still helps to know how differently the main independent shelves behave, a subject we went into in Spotify's Indian indie gatekeepers.
Fresh Finds India is the entry level. Its description reads "The best new music by independent artists and labels in India". It reached India in 2021, when Firstpost's Amit Gurbaxani reported that Spotify had taken Fresh Finds to 13 more markets and described the list as "often the very first level of Spotify playlisting for independent artists". Since Spotify launched Fresh Finds Forward on 17 September 2026, eligible artists added to any Fresh Finds playlist from 1 January 2026 are invited to a year of membership, with a profile badge and partner tools. The free studio time is for US-based artists.
RADAR India ("Most exciting artists from the Indian Indie scene") and Indie India ("Best of the Indian Indie scene") are the bigger rooms. Indie India showed 977,177 saves on its public page at about 1:35 AM IST, against 205,289 for RADAR India. RADAR launched in India in May 2020. In 2021 Spotify's Padmanabhan Nurani told Firstpost that "the main criteria is that these artists can't be on any major or big labels in India", and that "a pure hip-hop artist works much better" on a hip-hop playlist than getting a skip on a general one. That interview is five years old.
What our snapshot shows is separate shelves, not a ladder you climb in a week. At 1:33 AM IST, 16 of RADAR India's 75 songs were also on Indie India. Not one of Fresh Finds India's 50 appeared on either. Rock in India shared one song with each. A pitch doesn't get you onto "Spotify". It gets you considered by whichever editor your tags point to.
And not every slot starts with a pitch. When this desk studied how fresh Fresh Finds India really is, the median song on it was about nine weeks past its release date, long after any pitch window had shut. Editors find songs after release too. It can also move very fast. Anubha Bajaj's Ishaare came out on 8 October 2026 with her own name on the ℗ line, and by 16 October it was No. 1 on RADAR India with her on the cover. We don't know whether it was pitched, and I wouldn't plan a release around her timeline.
Distributors, metadata and the release date
Independent artists can't put songs on Spotify directly. Spotify's own help page says to work with a distributor, which delivers the music and pays the streaming royalties, and Spotify keeps a public directory of the providers it prefers or recommends. DistroKid, TuneCore, CD Baby, Ditto, Amuse and Believe are all in it.
Whoever delivers your song, check the boring details before you pitch. Make sure the artist name matches your existing Spotify profile exactly, so the release lands on the page you control. You need Admin or Editor access on that profile's Spotify for Artists team to see the pitch. Fix the release date before delivery and leave it alone. And look at the rights line. In our reading of ℗ lines on Rock in India and Fresh Finds India, four Rock in India tracks carried DistroKid's automatic "Records DK" placeholder, which appears when no label is entered. Your own name or imprint is better.
What money can and can't buy
Here is the part the promoters in your Instagram messages leave out. Spotify's support page says any service that "claims to offer guaranteed placement on playlists on Spotify in exchange for money" breaks its terms, and that services selling streams could get your music removed. Confirmed artificial streaming can cost you royalties and playlist spots, and your distributor may suspend your account.
Spotify's own paid tools are a different matter, and for teams based in India they are mostly not available. Discovery Mode takes a 30% commission on recording royalties from streams in Spotify Radio, Autoplay and some Mixes. It needs an artist team registered in a listed country, at least 25,000 monthly listeners and three eligible songs, and India was not on its country list when we read it on 17 October 2026. India was also missing from the list of countries where teams can run Marquee and Showcase, Spotify's paid in-app promotions. These lists change. Check them yourself before you believe anyone, me included.
I don't think Indian independents are worse off for this. An artist without 25,000 listeners, the audience size at which Spotify says Discovery Mode works best, would be paying a cut for reach they can't yet turn into fans.
What to expect from a pitch
Most pitches don't land. Spotify says so: pitching doesn't guarantee placement, and editors may pick a different song from the release than the one you sent. On the lists we follow, slots are few and slow to turn over; on our evidence Fresh Finds India changes about five songs a week.
So pitch every release, because it costs nothing and gets you onto Release Radar, and then stop refreshing the Playlists tab. Spotify's advice for songs that aren't picked is to keep building a fanbase "on Spotify and beyond". It is a dull answer, and I think it is the right one. The next pitch window opens the day your current song goes live.
FAQ
How do I pitch a song to Spotify editorial playlists from India?
Log in to Spotify for Artists, go to Music and then Upcoming, choose one unreleased song and complete the pitch form. Your distributor must have delivered the release first. The process is the same in India as everywhere else, and it is free.
How many days before release should I pitch on Spotify?
Spotify's minimum is seven days, which also secures a place on your followers' Release Radar. Distributors need time to deliver, so aim for two to four weeks between delivery and release.
Can I pay to get on RADAR India or Fresh Finds India?
No. Spotify says services that sell guaranteed playlist placement violate its terms, and confirmed artificial streaming can lead to withheld royalties and removal from playlists.
Is Spotify Discovery Mode available in India?
Not for teams registered in India, as of Spotify's country list on 17 October 2026. It also requires at least 25,000 monthly listeners and three eligible songs.
Can I pitch a song that is already released?
No. Once a song is live it can no longer be pitched. Editors do still add released songs: the median track on Fresh Finds India was about nine weeks old in our October study.
