Spotify's Indie India playlist is the platform's editorial showcase for Indian independent music, described by Spotify as the "Best of the Indian Indie scene." On the morning of 24 October 2026 it held 75 songs running about 254 minutes, with 101 different credited artists. Anuv Jain was the most-featured name with six tracks. The number one song was Aarzu by Noor, Khan and Madhurxo. Most of the list is recent, but not brand new: the median release date was May 2024, and only three songs had come out in the previous 90 days. Below we break down what was on the playlist that day, who appears most, how old the songs are and what that means for artists who want to get on it.
What the Indie India playlist is
Indie India is a playlist run by Spotify itself, not by a label or a fan. Its description on the day of our snapshot read "Best of the Indian Indie scene. Cover - Gini," meaning the singer-songwriter gini was the face of the playlist that week. Mint describes indie music as music produced independently of commercial record labels or their subsidiaries, often with a do-it-yourself approach to recording and release. In practice the playlist mixes self-released songs, songs on independent labels and some songs on bigger labels, so it is best read as Spotify's view of the non-film scene rather than a strict label test.
The playlist has grown with the scene. Mint reported in February 2021 that Indie India grew 90% year on year in 2020, as listeners stuck at home looked for new music. In December 2023 Mint reported that it grew by 200% over 2022, adding 250,000 new followers, and then added more than 250,000 more in 2023. When we checked the public page on 17 October 2026 for our guide to pitching Spotify playlists in India, it showed 977,177 saves.
How we built this snapshot
We read the full tracklist from Spotify's public embed for the playlist at about 9:35 AM IST on Saturday 24 October 2026. For each of the 75 tracks we recorded its position, title, credited artists, length and release date as Spotify lists them. Editorial playlists change often, so treat these numbers as one dated reading, not a permanent fact. Every figure in this article comes from that snapshot unless another source is named.

Who appears most
Counting every credit, including featured and collaborating artists, these names appear most often:
- Anuv Jain, 6 tracks
- Aditya Rikhari, 5 tracks
- gini, 4 tracks
- Mitraz, 4 tracks
- Chaar Diwaari, 3 tracks
- Kushagra, 3 tracks
- The Local Train, 3 tracks
- Prateek Kuhad, 3 tracks
Together these eight names hold 31 credits. The rest of the list is wide: 101 distinct artists are credited across the 75 songs, and 85 of them appear only once. That mix of a few anchor artists and a long tail of names is a big part of the playlist's character. Anuv Jain's six songs are Jo Tum Mere Ho, Baarishein, Husn, Gul, Alag Aasmaan and Mazaak. The Local Train's three are Choo Lo, Aaoge Tum Kabhi and Dil Mere, all from their 2015 debut album.
How old the songs are
The release years of the 75 tracks break down like this:
- 2015, 3 tracks
- 2018, 2 tracks
- 2020, 6 tracks
- 2021, 2 tracks
- 2022, 12 tracks
- 2023, 10 tracks
- 2024, 13 tracks
- 2025, 12 tracks
- 2026, 15 tracks
There were no songs from 2016, 2017 or 2019. The median release date was 11 May 2024. Eighteen songs came out in the 12 months before the snapshot, and only three came out in the 90 days before it: Yeh Duniya by Curtain Blue, Halki Halki by Saahel and Punchiri by Eechuu, Suhas and Chris Wayne.
This is the most useful thing the snapshot shows. Indie India is not a new-release playlist. Most of its songs have had months or years to prove themselves before or while sitting there. Spotify has separate programmes for new names, such as RADAR and Fresh Finds, and our analysis of how fresh Fresh Finds India really is looks at that side.
The oldest and newest songs
The oldest songs on the playlist were three tracks by The Local Train, all dated 25 September 2015: Choo Lo, Aaoge Tum Kabhi and Dil Mere. They come from the band's debut album Aalas Ka Pedh. The newest was Punchiri by Eechuu, Suhas and Chris Wayne, released on 8 October 2026, just 16 days before the snapshot. More than eleven years separate the oldest and newest songs on the same list.
Collaborations and soundtrack songs
- 34 of the 75 tracks credit more than one artist, which is 45% of the playlist.
- Five track titles say "From" a film, show or project: Finding Her (Female Version) from UR Debut, Ishq and Sajde from Lost;Found, Kaise Ab Kahein from Gutar Gu, and Katchi Sera from Think Indie.
- Aashiqana by Chaar Diwaari with Indian Ocean and gini, at number 39, links one of India's longest-running independent bands with two of the playlist's most-featured younger names.
Collaborations are clearly a common route onto the list. Close to half the songs bring two or more artists together, often a singer with a producer.
Song length
- The average track was about 3 minutes 23 seconds long.
- 27 of the 75 tracks were shorter than 3 minutes.
- The shortest ran 70 seconds and the longest 7 minutes 40 seconds.
What this means for artists
The snapshot suggests three things for independent artists who want to reach Indie India.
- A song can stay for years. Thirteen tracks came out before 2022, so a strong song is not finished after release week.
- The list is wide. With 101 credited artists, there is room for names that have only one song on it.
- Collaborations are common. Almost half the list credits more than one artist.
The way in is Spotify's own pitching tool. Spotify's support page says artists can pitch one upcoming, unreleased song at a time through Spotify for Artists, under Music and then Upcoming. If the song is pitched at least seven days before release, Spotify adds it to followers' Release Radar playlists. Once a song is live it can no longer be pitched. Our piece on the people who shape Indian indie playlists covers the editorial side in more depth.
How to listen to and download the playlist
Indie India is free to stream on Spotify. Spotify's support page says Premium listeners can download albums and playlists for offline listening, while the free version only allows podcast downloads. Premium downloads stay available as long as the device goes online at least once every 30 days.
