Rangi Saari is a traditional thumri, sung in the lighter dadra form, whose composer is unknown. Thumri queen Shobha Gurtu made it famous on the concert stage, and the version most listeners know today came out on 24 April 2020 as an independent single by Sufi and playback singer Kavita Seth and her son, the producer Kanishk Seth. The Seths set the old love song over electronic production, and in 2022 Dharma Productions used it in the film Jugjugg Jeeyo, which won Kavita Seth the Filmfare Award for Best Female Playback Singer. More than six years after release, the original single is still on Spotify's Indie India playlist.
This guide covers where the song comes from, what it is about, how the 2020 version was made, and why it has lasted so long.
Where Rangi Saari comes from
Rangi Saari gulabi chunariya was never written by a known composer. In a 2025 column in The Indian Express marking Shobha Gurtu's centenary, the writer describes it as an "age-old dadra" with a distinct Purabiya lilt. Like many thumris, it was probably created by women singers in 19th-century Awadh as a hori, a song form tied to Holi, with shringaar ras (the romantic mood) as its main feeling and Radha and Krishna as its main characters.
Shobha Gurtu's benchmark version
The same column says the popular version of the piece can be traced to Shobha Gurtu. She performed it in concert and on records that made it widely popular, yet she never claimed it as her own and always called it "paramparik", meaning traditional. Her rendition is still the model for singers who perform the piece and a good way to learn how the genre works.
Gurtu, who lived from 1925 to 2004, was a Hindustani classical singer best known for light classical music. She came to be called the Thumri Queen and received the Padma Bhushan in 2002. Konkani was her mother tongue and Marathi her second language. Even so, she became one of the leading voices of the Purab ang style of eastern Uttar Pradesh. She also sang in Kamal Amrohi's Pakeezah. Her son is the percussionist Trilok Gurtu.
What is a dadra
Dadra is a light classical form associated with Hindustani music. Kanishk Seth has called the Gurtu recording he grew up with "a thumri in dadra" with a different time signature from his own version. The lighter form helps explain why the song has always moved easily between classical concerts, film soundtracks and pop.
What the song is about
When the Seths released their single, Kavita Seth told The Times of India that Rangi Saari "symbolises love and all its playful mischiefs with the beloved." That fits the hori tradition the Indian Express column describes, where Radha and Krishna tease and court each other during the festival of colours. The title line refers to a dyed pink chunariya, or scarf.
The lyrics are credited as traditional. As the Indian Express column points out, the composition was also listed as traditional when the Seths first released the song independently.
How Kavita and Kanishk Seth remade it in 2020
Kavita Seth was born in Bareilly in 1970. She is known for Hindi film songs and for performing Sufi music and ghazals, and she leads the Karwaan Group. Her film songs include Mujhe Mat Roko from Gangster, Iktara from Wake Up Sid, Tumhi Ho Bandhu from Cocktail and Jeete Hain Chal from Neerja. Iktara won her first Filmfare Award in 2010. Her son Kanishk Seth is a composer, producer and indie-electronic artist.
According to Spotify, the duo released Rangi Saari as a single on 24 April 2020, during the Covid-19 pandemic. The recording is credited to Kavita Seth with no outside label, which makes it an independent release. In an interview with The Times of India that month, Kavita Seth said: "We wanted to share hope, joy, love in these strange, pensive, troubled times the world is going through."
Kanishk Seth explained the idea in the same interview: "Rangi Saari is a traditional thumri that has been rendered in different ways across years. When mom and I collaborated on this one, we wanted to share a soulful yet refreshing version of the same." He also said the lyrics, the playfulness and the romance come alive with "groovy contemporary, electronic sounds." The SoundCloud credits list Kavita Seth and Kanishk Seth as singers and Adwait on flute.
Keeping the soul of the song
The Seths had to decide how much to change. Speaking to Indulge Express in 2024, Kanishk Seth said he made the new version out of love for the song. He also said he learned that it was "very important to keep the soul of the song intact." In his view, the arrangement works because the electronic music does not box in his mother's vocals. "The whole idea is to give respect and space to an artiste who is from that form," he said.
Kavita Seth said much the same to Hindustan Times in 2022. She said she has reworked many of her favourite songs, sometimes even changing the poetry, but was always clear about not taking away the original character. "And that's what we did with Rangi Saari as well," she said.
From independent single to Jugjugg Jeeyo
The song almost reached the big screen earlier. Kavita Seth told Hindustan Times that when the song was at an early stage, they sent it to director Shashank Khaitan, who wanted it for Dhadak. She said it did not end up in that film because Atul Gogavale was composing the Dhadak music and there were issues with the music label.
The song finally reached cinema in Jugjugg Jeeyo, a 2022 Hindi family comedy-drama directed by Raj Mehta and produced by Dharma Productions and Viacom18 Studios. In the film it is titled Rangisari and features Varun Dhawan and Kiara Advani. Hindustan Times noted that, although it was a recreation, it was very well received, which it said rarely happens with remixes. Kavita Seth and Kanishk Seth were credited as composers.
At the 68th Filmfare Awards in 2023, Kavita Seth won Best Playback Singer (Female) for Rangisari. Filmfare reported that on stage she told the audience the song had been composed by her son.
The credit question
The song's success has started a debate. In the Indian Express centenary column, the writer argues that many classical vocalists sing Rangi Saari without crediting Shobha Gurtu. The writer also notes that the Seths took composition credit on the film version while the lyrics were listed as traditional, and calls them "no more than music producers here." The column puts the numbers side by side: the Seths' version had passed 140 million streams on Spotify, while Gurtu's had been streamed only about a lakh times.
Readers can weigh both sides. A traditional song with no known composer belongs to everyone, and the 2020 production brought it to many listeners who had never heard a thumri. The same column also shows how easily a singer like Gurtu, who made the piece famous, can be forgotten.
Why Rangi Saari still matters for Indian indie
For independent artists, Rangi Saari is a useful example. It was self-released during a lockdown and built its audience on streaming before any film company picked it up. It then went on to win a major film award. The arrangement shows a pattern found across Indian independent music today, where traditional vocals sit on top of electronic beats. If you like that sound, our guides to Indian folk fusion bands and Indian electronic music producers are a good next step, and our list of essential Hindi indie songs covers more tracks in the same space.
The song also sends listeners back to the source. Anyone who likes the Seths' version should listen to Shobha Gurtu's recording to hear the dadra in its original form.
