Rating: 4/5

There is no warm-up on Cold Logic. "Dimension Exile" kicks the door in and the record spends the next 34 minutes refusing to let you settle. That is the whole design. Maneating Orchid's third album is built from abrupt left turns, uneven song shapes and riffs that seem to fold back on themselves — a wall of sound that always feels a second away from collapse and never quite does.

A new drummer, a sharper blade

The Bengaluru four-piece — vocalist Kaushal LS, guitarist Vinay Prasad, bassist Rahil Ahmed and new drummer Vishnu Reddy — has been making some of the strangest heavy music in India for over a decade. Reddy is the difference here. His blasts and lurching syncopations push an already volatile band into something more feral, and producer Aakash Sherpa's mix at Anomaly Audio leaves every hit exposed.

"Void Engine" is the clearest showcase: rhythmically unpredictable, hammering, topped by a scream from Kaushal that is less growl than alarm. "Binary Contagion" is over in 56 seconds, gang vocals and all. "Malformed Horizon", the longest cut, slows into ominous narration about a planet disintegrating like a body.

From protest to the void

The band's previous two releases reacted to the world outside. Cold Logic looks up and inward at once — deep-space isolation, post-human mutation, body horror, a universe with no story to tell you. "We build machines to make our lives easier," Kaushal told Rolling Stone India, "but at some point, the boundary between the human and the technology starts becoming less obvious." In a year of AI anxiety, the sci-fi reads as reportage.

The FFO list on their Bandcamp — Voivod, Gorguts, Converge, Botch, Cardiacs — is honest. So is the harmonium Vinay sneaks in. The record never sounds like a tribute to any of them.

The verdict

It is not a gentle listen, and it is not trying to be. But for anyone who wants Indian extreme music that takes real compositional risks, this is the year's benchmark. The band have taken it from Bangalore Death Fest (opening for Incantation) to Kathmandu, Mumbai, Guwahati and Kolkata. Catch it live if you can.

Start with: "Void Engine", "Arcological Horror", "Malformed Horizon".
