Bandcamp is the one big music platform where a fan pays you directly, at a price you set, for something they keep. For Indian independent artists used to fractions of a paisa per stream, that changes the maths entirely. A single ₹500 album sale on Bandcamp can out-earn tens of thousands of streams. This guide covers how Bandcamp works for artists and bands in India in 2026, how you get paid now that the Stripe payout shift is under way, what to sell, how to price it, and how Indian acts actually build sales on a platform most of their listeners have never opened.

What Bandcamp is, and what it isn't

Bandcamp is a storefront plus a streaming page. You upload your music in lossless quality, set prices for tracks, albums and merch, and fans buy downloads, vinyl, cassettes, T-shirts or subscriptions. Fans can stream your music on your page, but there's no per-stream royalty the way Spotify or JioSaavn pays. The money comes from purchases.

Bandcamp is not a distributor. Uploading to Bandcamp does not put your songs on Spotify, Apple Music, JioSaavn or Amazon Music. You still need a distributor for those (see our music distribution in India comparison). Most Indian independent artists run both: streaming platforms for reach, Bandcamp for the fans willing to pay.

Why Indian indie artists should bother

  • Direct revenue. Bandcamp states it takes a 15% revenue share on digital sales (dropping to 10% once you pass a sales threshold) and 10% on physical goods, plus payment processing fees. The rest is yours.
  • You set the price. You can sell an EP at a fixed price, or use "name your price" with a minimum so superfans can pay more. Many fans do.
  • Global fans pay in dollars. Your listeners in the diaspora, and genre fans in Europe, the US and Japan, already use Bandcamp. Metal, post-rock, ambient, electronic and experimental music sell especially well there.
  • Bandcamp Fridays. On designated Fridays, Bandcamp waives its revenue share. Releasing or pushing merch on those days means more of each sale reaches you.
  • Fan data. Buyers can opt in to share their email with you. That list is yours, unlike a follower count on a platform.

How Indian artists get paid on Bandcamp in 2026

This is the part that has changed. Historically, Bandcamp paid artists only via PayPal. Bandcamp is now moving to a Stripe-powered payment system, and Bandcamp's help centre lists India among the countries supported for Stripe payouts. Key points as of Bandcamp's July 2026 help pages:

  • Bandcamp says it is moving sellers over to Stripe in groups. Until your account is switched, PayPal remains the payout route, so keep your PayPal account active and verified.
  • Bandcamp says PayPal will stay available through the end of 2026 while the transition completes.
  • When prompted, you create a new Stripe payout account from your Bandcamp settings, even if you already have a Stripe account elsewhere. You pick your country (India), business type (individual or company) and add bank details.
  • Bandcamp lists Stripe processing fees of 5% + $0.06 for sales of $8.06 or less, and 2.9% + $0.30 for sales above that, with a possible 2% foreign exchange fee on international purchases. Payouts to your bank account are listed as free.
  • Under PayPal, payouts arrive 24–48 hours after a sale by default, or you can switch to monthly payouts to reduce PayPal's per-payout fee.
  • Bandcamp collects tax information from accounts selling over $5,000 a year.

On the Indian side, foreign earnings from Bandcamp are income. Keep your payout statements; they feed your return. Our guide to income tax for musicians in India and GST for musicians explains how export of services and presumptive tax may apply. Ask a CA for your specific case.

Setting up your Bandcamp artist page

  1. Sign up as an artist (or a label if you release for several acts).
  2. Pick your URL carefully: yourname.bandcamp.com. Match your Instagram handle and your trademarked band name if you have one.
  3. Upload a square header image, an artist photo and a short bio that names your city and genre. "Delhi doom metal" or "Bengaluru ambient producer" helps Bandcamp search and tags.
  4. Add your location. Bandcamp's discovery pages use it, and fans browsing "India" will find you.
  5. Link your Instagram, YouTube and streaming profiles.
  6. Upload WAV or FLAC masters. Bandcamp generates MP3, FLAC and other formats for buyers.
  7. Add credits and lyrics. Fans read them, and they help search.

What to sell

  • Digital albums and EPs. The core product. Upload full lossless audio, artwork and liner notes.
  • Singles. Useful between releases, but albums and EPs sell better on Bandcamp than on streaming-first platforms.
  • Name-your-price tracks. Good for a free-download lead magnet that still lets fans tip.
  • Physical formats. Cassettes, CDs and vinyl. Indian acts increasingly press small runs of cassettes (often 50–100) for gigs and Bandcamp.
  • Merch. T-shirts, posters, zines. Pair with print-on-demand merch options in India if you don't want inventory.
  • Bundles. Album plus shirt plus sticker at one price is the most effective upsell on the platform.
  • Fan subscriptions. Bandcamp lets you offer a paid subscription giving fans everything you release. It works like the membership models in our fan funding guide.

Pricing for Indian artists

Bandcamp shows prices in your chosen currency. Many Indian artists price in USD because most buyers are overseas, but you can price in INR. Practical patterns:

  • Singles: around $1 or ₹50–100, often name-your-price.
  • EPs: $4–6 or ₹200–400.
  • Albums: $7–10 or ₹400–700.
  • Cassettes: $8–12 plus shipping.
  • Always set "let fans pay more if they want". A noticeable share of buyers round up.

Shipping physical goods abroad from India is the main pain point. India Post international parcels are cheapest; courier services are faster but costly. Set shipping per region and be honest about delivery times.

Getting fans to actually buy

Bandcamp's own discovery helps, but most sales come from fans you send there. What works for Indian acts:

  • Release on Bandcamp first or same-day. Give buyers a reason, such as a bonus track, early access or a lossless download.
  • Use Bandcamp Fridays. Post the dates on Instagram and remind fans that more of the money reaches you.
  • Sell at gigs with download codes. Bandcamp lets you generate download codes. Print them on cards and sell at merch tables, which works when fans don't want physical media.
  • Tag carefully. Use genre, mood and location tags. Niche tags such as "indian metal", "bengali folk" or "hindustani ambient" bring in curious buyers.
  • Pitch Bandcamp Daily and blogs. Bandcamp's editorial site covers releases from around the world. Pair it with our list of Indian music blogs and the guide to submitting music to blogs.
  • Email buyers. Bandcamp lets you message followers when you release. That's free re-marketing.
  • Join labels' pages. If you're on an Indian independent label, being on their Bandcamp page shares their audience.

Bandcamp vs streaming: how to split your release

You don't have to choose. A common 2026 setup for Indian indie acts:

  • Distribute the release to streaming platforms through your distributor for reach and playlists.
  • Put the same release on Bandcamp with lossless downloads, bonus material and merch bundles.
  • Send superfans to Bandcamp and casual listeners to Spotify or JioSaavn.
  • Keep ISRCs consistent across both (our ISRC and ISWC explainer covers why).

Some artists hold a release back from streaming for a week or two as a Bandcamp exclusive. That suits genres with buyer-heavy audiences, like metal, experimental and electronic music, more than mainstream pop.

Rights and royalties on Bandcamp

You need to own or control the rights to everything you upload. Don't upload unlicensed covers. Our cover song licence guide explains why. If you use samples, clear them first (sample clearance in India). Bandcamp's help pages mention a collection society accrual on some sales depending on the fan's location. If you're a songwriter, registering your works with IPRS is still worthwhile.

Common mistakes

  • Treating Bandcamp as a dumping ground for old demos with no artwork or credits.
  • Not setting up the Stripe payout account when Bandcamp prompts you, then losing time when PayPal phases out.
  • Letting your PayPal account lapse before your Stripe switch is confirmed.
  • Pricing everything at the minimum. Fans who buy on Bandcamp want to support you.
  • Forgetting shipping costs and losing money on every cassette sent abroad.
  • Never telling fans the page exists. Put the Bandcamp link in your bio, your EPK and gig posters.

Quick checklist

  • Artist page live with location, bio, links and credits
  • Lossless masters uploaded with artwork
  • PayPal active; Stripe payout account set up when Bandcamp prompts you
  • Name-your-price minimums set
  • At least one bundle (music plus merch)
  • Download codes printed for gigs
  • Bandcamp Friday dates in your release calendar
  • Payout statements saved for your tax filing

Bandcamp will never replace streaming reach for Indian artists, but it is the easiest place to turn fans into income. Set it up once, keep it current, and point your most committed listeners there.
