Most debut singles from a hill town arrive soft. Sum Negative's Bait does not. The Shimla four-piece dropped the track independently on 31 October, and it hits like a band that already knows what it wants to sound like: nu-metal weight, groove-first guitar, and a vocal that stays theatrical without tipping into costume.

The song's story is ugly on purpose. The narrator argues with his own conscience, stacks fate against the choices he already made, then lands on the line that gives the single its name — he was never casting the line. He was the bait. That is not a metaphor the band dresses up. They let it sit bitter, which is the point.

Credit the writing core for that. Bassist Ishan Maynem (also the primary lyricist; he releases as Inukun) and guitarist Varun Valentine have been building this language since their earlier project Nurotia and the three-track EP BLINK. Valentine writes the riffs — ESP LTD through a Peavey 6505, thrash precision with Meshuggah and Tool hanging in the background. Aman Manson fronts it with the Marilyn Manson / Hatebreed streak the EPK promises, and Manish Behemoth locks the kit; he also drums for Shimla thrash outfit Deathknell, so the pocket is not tourist heavy music.

Production is in-house. Sum Negative produced Bait themselves. Girjashankar recorded and mixed. The name that will make metal heads look twice is at the end of the chain: mastered by Alan Douches at West West Side Music — the same room that has finished records for a long list of serious heavy acts. For a first single out of Shimla, that is not a vanity credit. It is a standard.

They have already road-tested the live version of this band — Mars in Shimla, then Freaks on Stage and Return of the Freaks at Depot 48 in New Delhi — and they carry more originals (Whisper That Haunts, Genocide) waiting behind this one. Bait is the first public cut, not the whole set.

Add it to the map of Indian independent music that is not waiting for a Delhi or Mumbai postcode to get loud.
