Most Indian independent releases fail quietly for one reason: the song comes out on Friday and nobody knew it was coming. A pre-save campaign fixes that. It turns casual followers into first-day listeners, gives streaming algorithms early signals and gives you a reason to talk about the song for weeks before it drops. This guide explains what pre-saves are, which tools to use, how to run a four-week campaign from India and how to measure whether it worked.
What a pre-save is
A pre-save lets a fan click a link before release and have the song automatically added to their library (and sometimes a playlist) on release day. On some platforms the equivalent is a pre-add or a release countdown page.
Why it matters:
- First-day saves and listens are a signal of interest to streaming services' recommendation systems.
- It captures intent while fans are excited by a teaser.
- Many pre-save tools collect fan emails or follows, building your owned audience.
Pre-saves are not a guarantee of playlist placement. They are one part of a release plan that should also include pitching, content and outreach.
Tools you can use
- Smart link and pre-save platforms such as Feature.fm, Linkfire and Hypeddit create a single link that shows pre-save buttons for multiple platforms and later switches to streaming links.
- Many distributors offer free pre-save or smart-link pages; check your distributor dashboard first. See our music distribution comparison.
- Spotify for Artists offers release promotion features such as countdown pages for eligible releases; check what is available on your profile.
Check each tool's data-collection settings. Only collect emails with clear consent and a reason to subscribe, and connect the list to your email newsletter.
The India reality: JioSaavn, Gaana and YouTube
Pre-save tools are strongest for Spotify, Apple Music and Deezer. Many Indian listeners use JioSaavn, YouTube Music, Gaana and Amazon Music, where pre-save support varies. Adapt your plan:
- Use your smart link to show every platform on release day, even if pre-save works only on some.
- For YouTube, set up a premiere or upload the official video as scheduled, and share the link so fans can set a reminder.
- Pitch JioSaavn and other Indian platforms separately. See our JioSaavn pitch guide, Gaana guide and Amazon Music guide.
- Use Instagram's music sticker and audio-library presence once the song is live. Our Reels guide explains how songs reach the library.
Before the campaign: get the foundations right
- Deliver the release to your distributor early. Four weeks is a safe minimum; earlier is better for editorial pitching.
- Pitch the song through Spotify for Artists once it appears as upcoming. Our Spotify playlist pitching guide covers what to write.
- Check metadata, artwork, ISRC codes and credits. See ISRC and ISWC codes explained.
- Prepare assets: cover art, a short teaser, behind-the-scenes clips, lyric snippets and press photos.
A four-week pre-save campaign
Week 4: announce
- Reveal the title, cover art and release date.
- Post the pre-save link in your bio, stories and community.
- Email your list with the story of the song.
- Message your Discord or WhatsApp community first. Your core fans should hear it before anyone else.
Week 3: the story
- Share how the song was written: a voice memo, an early demo, a lyric notebook.
- Post a 15-second hook as a Short and a Reel. Our YouTube Shorts guide has formats.
- Send blog and media pitches with a private streaming link. See submitting music to blogs.
Week 2: involve fans
- Run a simple activity: fans pre-save and share a screenshot for a chance to appear in a lyric video, get a handwritten lyric sheet or join a private listening session.
- Keep any giveaway fair and clear; avoid anything that looks like buying streams.
- Post studio or rehearsal clips.
- Brief friends and collaborators with a ready-made caption and link.
Week 1: countdown
- Daily stories with a countdown sticker.
- Announce a release-day livestream, listening party or gig. See our album launch and listening party guide.
- Remind your email list 48 hours before release.
Release day
- Switch every link to streaming links (most smart links do this automatically).
- Post the full announcement on every channel.
- Go live or host a listening party.
- Thank everyone who pre-saved.
Weeks after release
- Keep posting short clips for at least four to six weeks; many songs take time to catch on.
- Share playlist adds, press coverage and fan reactions.
- Release a lyric video or visualizer to extend the campaign. Our lyric video guide covers options.
- Plan the next single while the audience is warm.
Sample captions you can adapt
- Announcement: "New song [Title] out [date]. It's about [one-line story]. Pre-save now so it lands in your library the moment it drops: [link]"
- Story post: "This started as a voice note at 2 a.m. in [city]. Here's the first demo. Final version out [date]. Pre-save in bio."
- Countdown: "Three days. [Title]. Link in bio, and see you at the listening party on [date]."
- Release day: "[Title] is out everywhere. Thank you to everyone who pre-saved. Add it to a playlist and tell one friend."
Keep captions short, personal and in the languages your fans use. A Hindi or regional-language caption alongside English often performs better for Indian audiences.
Budgeting a campaign
A pre-save campaign can run on almost nothing if you create content yourself. Common optional costs include a smart-link subscription, a small ad test to your existing followers, a photographer for fresh images, and a lyric video. Spend on assets you can reuse across the whole release cycle, and avoid spending on anything that promises numbers instead of real listeners.
White-hat rules
Some services promise guaranteed streams, playlist placements or pre-saves for money. Avoid them.
- Artificial streams can lead platforms to remove tracks or withhold royalties.
- Paid placements on unknown playlists often use bots.
- Fake engagement corrupts your data, so you cannot learn who your real fans are.
Real pre-saves from real fans, even a few hundred, are worth far more.
Measuring the campaign
Track:
- Pre-save count and conversion rate from link clicks.
- Email sign-ups collected.
- First-week streams, saves and listeners in streaming dashboards.
- Top cities and sources of streams.
- Short-video views and audio uses.
- Media and playlist coverage.
Write down what worked. Over a few releases, you will see which content and channels move your audience. Our streaming income guide explains how these metrics connect to earnings.
Common mistakes
- Starting the campaign one week before release.
- Uploading to the distributor too late to pitch editors.
- Pre-save link that only works for one platform with no fallback.
- No content plan between announcement and release.
- Stopping promotion on release day.
- Buying streams or fake engagement.
Quick checklist
- Release delivered to distributor four or more weeks early.
- Editorial pitch submitted.
- Smart link or pre-save page live.
- Four-week content calendar ready.
- Email and community announcements scheduled.
- Release-day event planned.
- Post-release content for six weeks.
- Metrics tracked.
A pre-save campaign is simply a release plan with a clear call to action. Run it for every single, learn from the numbers, and each release will start stronger than the last.
