YouTube is India's biggest music platform by reach, and for many independent artists it out-earns Spotify. But "monetization" on YouTube isn't one switch. Your music earns through your own channel, through the auto-generated Topic channel and Art Tracks, and through other people's videos that use your songs. This guide maps all three for musicians and artists in India.

Three ways your music earns on YouTube

  1. Your channel — ads and Premium revenue on your videos once you're in the YouTube Partner Program (YPP), plus fan funding.
  2. Art Tracks / Topic channel — your distributor delivers audio to YouTube Music; those streams pay through the distributor, regardless of YPP.
  3. Content ID — when others use your recording, claims send revenue to you via your distributor or Content ID partner. See our Content ID and OAC guide.

Many artists have income from 2 and 3 before they ever qualify for 1.

YPP thresholds in India (as of late 2026)

YouTube's India creator page lists two tiers:

Fan funding and shopping tier — 500 subscribers, 3 public uploads in the past 90 days, and either 3,000 public long-form watch hours in the past 365 days or 3 million Shorts views in 90 days. Unlocks channel memberships, Super Thanks/Chat/Stickers and shopping.

Ads and Premium revenue tier — 1,000 subscribers and either 4,000 public long-form watch hours (365 days) or 10 million Shorts views (90 days).

Shorts watch time doesn't count toward the 4,000 hours. You also need 2-Step Verification, no active Community Guidelines strikes, advanced features and an AdSense for YouTube account.

What changes on 1 February 2027

YouTube has announced that from 1 February 2027, new applicants for ads and Premium revenue will need 8,000 watch hours or 20 million Shorts views (plus 1,000 subscribers). Creators already in YPP aren't affected by the entry change. Fan-funding thresholds stay the same. YouTube also said Shorts revenue sharing will apply to channels with 10 million qualified Shorts views in 90 days. If you're close to today's threshold, early 2027 is a real deadline.

The Official Artist Channel advantage

An Official Artist Channel (OAC) merges your channel with your Topic channel, so subscribers and catalogue sit in one place. Distributors can request OAC once you have releases on YouTube Music. A bigger, unified channel reaches YPP faster.

Content that actually earns for artists

  • Long-form performance videos — live sessions, full sets, studio diaries. They build watch hours, which Shorts can't.
  • Shorts — the top of the funnel. Use your own songs so Content ID earns for you on every reuse.
  • Lyric videos in the original language plus translated captions — strong for regional-language artists.
  • Premieres of music videos to concentrate early views and Super Chat.
  • Covers — powerful for discovery but revenue goes partly or fully to the publisher; see cover song licences in India.

Fan funding for Indian artists

  • Channel memberships — monthly perks: demos, early tickets, members-only lives.
  • Super Thanks on videos and Super Chat during live streams.
  • YouTube Shopping — link merch from eligible stores.

These often pay more per fan than ads for niche indie acts.

Avoiding monetization traps

  • Don't upload a track to your channel and also let your distributor's Content ID claim it — you'll claim yourself. Whitelist your own channel with the distributor.
  • Don't use unlicensed beats or samples; type-beat licences often exclude monetization.
  • Don't buy views. YouTube removes invalid traffic and can deny YPP.
  • Reused content (static image + audio playlists) can fail YPP review.

Getting paid

YouTube pays via AdSense once you cross its payment threshold. From India, you'll need PAN and tax info in AdSense; YouTube applies US withholding rules to US-viewer earnings unless tax info is submitted. This income goes in your return — see income tax for musicians in India.

A 90-day plan

| Weeks | Focus | |---|---| | 1–2 | Request OAC, fix branding, whitelist channel in Content ID | | 3–6 | Two long-form videos a week (live session, breakdown, vlog) | | Daily | One Short using your own audio | | 7–10 | First Premiere + live Q&A | | 11–13 | Review Analytics; double down on formats that hold attention |

US tax withholding on YouTube earnings: what Indian musicians should know

Every creator in YPP has to give Google US tax information in AdSense for YouTube, wherever they live. According to YouTube Help, Google withholds US tax only on the share of earnings that comes from viewers in the United States — ads, YouTube Premium, Super Chat, Super Stickers, Super Thanks and channel memberships — provided you've submitted valid tax info.

  • With a valid tax form and a treaty claim, the India–US treaty rate on royalties has been reported at 15% of US-viewer earnings (YouTube's own example and Indian press coverage cite this figure).
  • If you don't submit tax info, YouTube says it may withhold 24% of total worldwide earnings for an individual account, or 30% of US earnings for a business account outside the US.
  • YouTube also says tax forms expire after a few years and asks creators to check them annually, with a December deadline for treaty claims.

So if a Hindi indie artist earns ₹10,000 in a month and ₹1,000 of that comes from US viewers, withholding at the treaty rate would apply to that ₹1,000, not the whole amount. Indian tax experts quoted by Mint note that no Indian TDS is typically deducted on AdSense payouts, so you pay Indian tax yourself through advance tax and your return. US tax withheld may be creditable in India under the treaty — this is a question for your CA, not something to assume.

How much do musicians earn on YouTube in India?

There is no honest single number. YouTube doesn't publish India-specific rates, and earnings per thousand views swing with audience country, season, video length, and whether viewers are on Premium. Indian audiences generally earn less per view than US or UK ones, which is why many Indian artists rely on volume, Content ID on fan uploads, and fan funding rather than ad revenue alone. Treat any "₹X per 1,000 views" figure you see online as anecdotal. Your own YouTube Analytics revenue report is the only reliable source.

YouTube monetization for regional-language artists

Artists who sing in Punjabi, Bhojpuri, Haryanvi, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Marathi or Bengali often find YouTube is their biggest channel by far. Practical things that help:

  • Titles and descriptions in both scripts — native script plus a romanised version, because fans search both ways.
  • Captions and translated subtitles so non-native listeners stay longer, which improves watch time.
  • Lyric videos in the original language — fans sing along and replay.
  • Live streams around festivals and release days, when Super Chat activity tends to be higher.

FAQs for musicians and artists

Do I need YPP to earn from my songs on YouTube? No. Art Tracks and Content ID claims pay through your distributor regardless of YPP. YPP adds ads on your own channel uploads and fan funding.

Can I monetize a cover song? Usually only in the way the publisher allows — often revenue goes to the publisher; see cover song licences in India.

Does buying subscribers help reach YPP? No. YouTube reviews channels manually and can reject or remove channels with invalid activity.
