Standfirst: Indian independent music runs largely on artists' own savings. Music Ally, citing Orange Juice Lab's survey The Cost of a Dream, notes there are "just a handful" of grants for Indian indie musicians (Music Ally, April 2026). Here is every one we could verify, what it pays, who qualifies and when it usually opens, so you can plan next year's release around the calendar instead of finding out a week late.
The quick table
- Serendipity Arts: Independent Music Production Grant — Up to ₹1,50,000; who: Unsigned (no major label) solo/band, 18+, Indian bank account; distributor-tied: No; 2026: 17 Apr – 17 May (closed)

Serendipity Arts: Independent Music Production Grant
The most artist-friendly no-strings grant in the country. Its fourth edition (2026–27) offers up to ₹1,50,000 to two grantees for creating, recording, producing, releasing or presenting new music (Serendipity Arts).
- Eligibility: over 18, not signed to a major label, an Indian bank account (for a group, at least one member). Non-residents with an Indian account can apply, per the FAQ.
- What you submit: project proposal, execution plan with timelines, links to past work, works-in-progress if you have them, and a detailed budget.
- Use: the music must be unreleased, except for presentation projects such as a music video or a tour, which can be built around released work.
- Strings: paid in three instalments. Monthly progress reports, an audited fund-utilisation certificate, credit to Serendipity Arts, 10% TDS, plus GST if you're registered.
- Calendar: open call mid-April, deadline mid-May, winners early June.
Tip: a budget that adds up line by line (studio days, mix and master, video, PR) matters as much as the music. The IPRS/PPL clearance note in their FAQ is a reminder to read our licensing explainer.
India Foundation for the Arts (IFA)
IFA isn't a "fund my EP" grant. Its 2026 Arts Practice call funded Arts Platforms: workshops, residencies, artist gatherings and networks, physical or online, for up to 12 months and up to ₹3,00,000. Musicians and sound artists are explicitly eligible (IFA).
- Eligibility: Indian nationals only (not PIO/OCI), individuals only (not organisations), and a PAN card is required. Proposals are welcome in any Indian language.
- Fits: a songwriting residency in your town, a regional-language indie collective, a recurring listening session or workshop series. If you run an open mic or community gig, this is the grant to read. Our live gigs and permits guide covers the practical side.
Distributor grants: TuneCore, Madverse, Ziddi
These are real money, but each requires you to be a customer.
- The TuneCore Grant: ₹1,00,000 for a single, EP or album, plus an All About Music pass and DSP pitching and promotion. You need an active TuneCore plan and an unreleased demo. The 2025 recipient, guitarist Sutej Singh, put it towards his album Restless/Relentless (Music Ally). The 2026 round closed on 30 April.
- Madverse Empower Fund 3.0: three winners, each getting ₹1,00,000 split evenly between cash and perks (promotion, playlist cover, an All About Music pass). It requires a paid Madverse plan and an unreleased project you'll release through Madverse. Tracks already on any streaming platform are disqualified (Madverse). The 2026 window was 16–31 July.
- Ziddi Artist Grants: ₹5,000–₹25,000, non-repayable, with no rights transferred. It covers recording, mixing, artwork, video and marketing, for artists with at least one active Ziddi release. Reviews take around 14 business days (Ziddi).
Should you switch distributor for a grant? Only if the distributor suits you anyway. Compare fees and payouts first in our distribution comparison. A one-in-three chance at ₹50k cash doesn't justify a worse deal on every other release.
International and cultural-institute money
- British Council, Connections Through Culture: funds collaborations between UK artists and artists in participating countries. The 2026 round closed on 12 August, with project delivery between December 2026 and December 2027 (British Council). You need a UK partner.
- Goethe-Institut: watch for calls from its India centres. Its 2026 mobility grant was Africa-focused and not open to Indian artists (Goethe-Institut), so don't apply blind.
Not grants, but close
- Training scholarships: in 2026, Global Music Institute (Noida) offered women 25–50% off its production workshop (Music Ally).
- Sync fees: often bigger than any grant. See our sync licensing guide.
- Festival and showcase slots that pay. Track them in our 2026 festival calendar.
A grant calendar to plan around

- Mid-May: Serendipity deadline.

Dates move every year. We update this page when calls open. Tell us about a grant we've missed.
FAQ
Are there government grants for independent musicians in India? We couldn't verify any open central-government scheme aimed at independent popular musicians as of October 2026. The verified options are private, foundation-run, cultural-institute or distributor-run.
Can a band apply? Yes for Serendipity. For IFA, only individuals can apply, and collaborators must be Indian nationals.
Do grants take my rights? None of the grants listed here take ownership. Ziddi states this explicitly. Read every contract anyway.
Is grant money taxable? Serendipity deducts 10% TDS, and Madverse says tax will be deducted as per law. Ask a CA about your own case.
