Six days after release, Somebody to Love sat at No. 2 on Fresh Finds India. That is not a soft landing for a mid-career Bengaluru duo whose biggest stream hit is five years old. Apartment Upstairs — Rohan Pai and Shourjo Chatterjee — have spent the years since I'll Be With You proving they can still write a long, body-first single, file it under their own imprint, and let Spotify's discovery list do the rest. The question the record asks is sharper than the playlist slot: what does "somebody to love" actually sound like when the writers are Indian, the master is theirs, and the title already belongs to someone else's century?

Why this single matters this week
Fresh Finds India is a gate, not a coronation, as we argued in Spotify's Indian indie gatekeepers. Still, No. 2 six days after a Friday release is the kind of number that turns a quiet imprint single into a national listen. On the same midday snapshot, Bhool Ja held No. 1; Apartment Upstairs needed no major-label pitch to sit just under it. That is the discovery story. The musical story is older.
Pai and Chatterjee met in 2018 at college in New Delhi, then realised they shared a hometown in Bengaluru — the paneer-paratha-and-dosa joke Rolling Stone India printed in 2021 still says more about them than most bios. Two on the Line (2019), Graduation Day and 4 Year Escalator built a lane RSI called soul-drenched and wistful, and that Indulge Express later filed as funk, soul and jazz with deliberate mid-song genre switches. I'll Be With You, cut with Doc.Awes, Abhay Sharma and Fakeer, crossed a million streams and sat on Spotify's global Acid Jazz playlist. Somebody to Love is the first clear national playlist receipt for that lane in 2026.
Bengaluru's indie map this week still runs through English rock and fusion more than disco. Thermal And A Quarter hold Rock in India with Lies; the DIY through-line we traced in Rock in India's DIY roots and the regional map in regional rock bands of India explain why a nu-disco duo can feel adjacent and still under-served. Somebody to Love is the test of whether Fresh Finds will hold a groove this long.
What Somebody to Love actually does
The 30-second store preview is already a thesis. The master is hot — about −8.3 LUFS on the Apple preview we measured — with a tight loudness range and a pulse that settles near 114 BPM. Bass and kick occupy the floor; the midrange stays thick with keys and vocal; the top end is bright without turning brittle. This is not a sparse bedroom demo. It is a dance-floor arrangement wearing an Alternative genre tag.
That tag matters because the band's own framing is franker. On their Spotify page they call themselves a live nu-disco and funk duo, inspired by the disco and dance music that hit Bollywood in the 1970s, and they describe Somebody to Love as their latest South Asian disco-inspired release. Apple's Alternative label and the duo's disco claim are not a contradiction so much as a filing problem: Indian funk and disco rarely get a clean shelf, so the song lands where Alternative and Fresh Finds can find it. Listen to the preview and you hear the claim before you read the bio — a continuous groove, stacked parts, and a willingness to stay in the pocket past three minutes.
The credits explain the density. This is no longer only a two-piece on tape. Surya Kalyanaraman plays bass and writes; Leeanne Besterwitch plays keyboards and writes; Shashank Kandachar adds guitar; Soorya Praveen produces and records; Aman Dubey mixes, masters and records. Pai and Chatterjee co-produce. The expanded room is the musical argument: Somebody to Love wants the weight of a band, not the sketch of a duo. At 4:19 it also refuses the short-form bargain most Fresh Finds cuts take. That fourth minute is a mid-career choice — writers who already proved a hook can travel, and who now want the arrangement to finish its thought.
The title problem, and why it is not a cover
Say the title out loud and Jefferson Airplane arrives uninvited. That collision is real for search and casual listeners who assume a cover before they press play. It is also a fact that must be corrected in print: Somebody to Love by Apartment Upstairs is an original. Apple Music lists Rohan Pai, Shourjo Chatterjee, Surya Kalyanaraman and Leeanne Besterwitch as songwriters. There is no Darby Slick, no Grace Slick, no Jefferson Airplane credit on the release page we checked. The song shares a title with a 1967 San Francisco standard; it does not share writers, arrangement or ownership.
Whether the collision helps or hurts is the interesting part. It hurts raw search: anyone typing the three words will meet classic-rock results before Bengaluru. It can help once the song is heard, because the title sets an expectation of yearning that the groove answers in a different language — not psychedelic San Francisco, but South Asian disco as the band themselves name it. The artwork leans into that second reading: a Mughal-arch collage of piano keys, neon wireframes, elephants and banana leaves, title in lowercase outline type. It does not look like a cover tribute. It looks like a claim.
The ℗ line is the other headline
Apple Music reads ℗ 2026 Apartment Upstairs Records. That imprint name has been on their catalogue since Two on the Line in 2019. Owning the master is not a slogan here; it is a seven-year habit. We mapped how much Indian indie still signs away the ℗ line in who owns Indian indie music masters. Apartment Upstairs are on the other side of that ledger. Fresh Finds India No. 2 with no outside label on the copyright line is the receipt.
Independence does not mean isolation. The credits show a Bengaluru working circle, and the bio lists rooms already played: The Humming Tree and Mirage in Bengaluru, Pisco by The Beach in Goa, AntiSocial in Mumbai. The single is built to leave the apartment and hit a floor.
Who Apartment Upstairs are now
The early press still holds. RSI's 2021 Mahua piece framed them as a Bengaluru/New Delhi duo writing pandemic escapism with riff-and-verse switches; Indulge Express in 2022 caught Pai talking about mid-song genre flips and a next chapter rooted in 1960s–80s Bollywood listening. Somebody to Love is that chapter arriving as a single rather than an EP essay. The monthly-listener count on the day we checked — about 6.9K — is modest next to the 1.6 million streams on I'll Be With You. That gap is the mid-career condition: one song that travelled farther than the name, and a new song that has to teach the name again. Fresh Finds India is doing part of that teaching this week.
Verdict
Somebody to Love is a confident, heavily finished Alternative single that plays like the disco-funk record the band say they are making. It is original, on Apartment Upstairs Records, long enough to matter, and high enough on Fresh Finds India to prove the lane still converts. The Jefferson Airplane title is a discovery tax they chose to pay. The groove is the refund. What it needs next is a second spin on stage, in Goa and Mumbai as much as Bengaluru, before the playlist week moves on.
