What ISAMRA is

The Indian Singers' and Musicians' Rights Association (ISAMRA), formerly the Indian Singers Rights Association (ISRA), was incorporated on 3 May 2013 and registered as a copyright society under Section 33 of the Copyright Act on 14 June 2013 — the first society registered after the 2012 amendments. It was formed by singers including Lata Mangeshkar, Sonu Nigam, Alka Yagnik and others.

The right it administers

The Copyright (Amendment) Act, 2012 (in force from 21 June 2012) strengthened performers' rights under Sections 38 and 38A, including an inalienable right to receive royalty for commercial exploitation of a performance. ISAMRA states this right can only be assigned to legal heirs or a registered copyright society. Performer's rights last 50 years from the beginning of the calendar year after the performance.

ISAMRA's FAQ is clear that singer royalty is separate from — not carved out of — composer, lyricist, producer or label shares. For how the other societies fit, read IPRS, PPL and Novex explained.

Who can apply

Singers and musicians whose performance is on a commercially released recording. The membership form accepts proof such as a digital release on Spotify, JioSaavn, Gaana, iTunes or other platforms, with credits and links.

Documents listed on the membership form

  • Proof of performance and release (credits, links, or a letter from the composer/production house)
  • Self-attested copies of passport, PAN and Aadhaar
  • Three passport-size photographs
  • Work Notification Form listing your songs
  • Bank proof (statement or cancelled cheque)

Members execute a standard deed of exclusive authorisation for their performances. Check the latest form and terms on isamracopyright.com before applying.

How payouts work

Per ISAMRA's FAQ, distributions follow its distribution scheme, happen quarterly, are based on actual use or reliable statistical data, and carry no minimum guarantee. Note that ISAMRA's site lists its registration renewal as valid to June 2023; confirm current registration status with ISAMRA or the Copyright Office before signing.
